August 16, 2006: Red Sox 6 Tigers 1

The Tigers finally score a run in the series, and looked like they were going to take this one until the Sox came through with 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th. They loaded the bases on 2 singles and a walk, then got a bases loaded walk followed by 3 straight singles.

David Wells ends up with the win, his 3rd in limited action this season. Mike Timlin and Jonathan Papelbon handle the 8th and 9th as usual.

In a close game the Boston Red Sox got by the Detroit Tigers by the score of 6
to 4.

Boston had 5 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 7th inning with the
help of 5 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Mark Loretta who
brought a roar from the partisan Fenway Park fans when he slapped a base-hit
which was good for two runs. Detroit had a chance to come back in the 9th
but they came up short.

David Wells(3-2) went 7 innings allowing 4 runs for the win. Wells got help
from Jonathan Papelbon who was credited with his 26th save. Wil Ledezma(2-5)
took the loss in relief. He was unable to retire a batter giving up 2 hits
and 1 walk.

'It was a tough one to lose' said Jim Leyland 'We'll get them next time out.'

August 15, 2006: Red Sox 5 Tigers 0

Curt Schilling makes it 2 straight shutouts for the Red Sox with a 5-0 win over the Tigers. Schill was not quite as dominant as Beckett was the day before, but he scatters 6 hits over 9 innings for the shutout. Although they were outhit by the Tigers, the Sox managed to push runs across thanks to the 7 walks issued by Tiger pitchers as well as a critical 1st inning error by SS Carlos Guillen. The Sox also got a 2 run homer from Big Papi in the 2nd.

The Sox will try to make it a sweep of the Tigers next, then await the big 5-game showdown with the Yankees.

August 14, 2006: Nationals 4 Braves 2

There was a time when the Nats/Expos and Braves would be a marquee matchup between the top two teams in the NL East. Not this year, as the Braves were 21 games back at the start of the day while the Nats were 25.5 back of the division-leading Phillies. Still, I take joy in beating the Braves, especially when they do it with power, pitching, and baserunning like today.

Ramon Ortiz contributes 8 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs while striking out 9. The 8 innings were especially important after a couple 11 inning losses in which the Nats bullpen was overworked. For power, the Nats got a solo homer from Austin Kearns to account for one of their 4 runs. The 4th and final run scored on a ground out, but only because Alfonso Soriano was already on 3rd after executing a double steal with Nick Johnson.

Josh Beckett pitches a one hit gem en route to his 13th victory of the season, a 1-0 win over the AL Central-leading Tigers. The one hit actually led off the game, as Curtis Granderson singled and stole 2nd but was stranded there. Magglio Ordonez would be the only other Tiger to reach base, via walk in the 4th. Beckett then mowed down the next 16 batters in order for the impressive win.

The Sox lone run came in the 5th when Youkilis led off with a single, advanced to 2nd on a Mike Lowell ground out, then scored on a Wily Mo Pena single.

August 13, 2006: Mets 7 Nationals 5 (11)

The Nationals lose to the Mets in 11 innings for the 2nd straight day. This time, the Nats wasted a pretty good outing from Tony Armas, who went 7 innings allowing just 3 hits and 1 earned run. Saul Rivera relieved him in the 8th and it started something like this: walk, single, wild pitch, wild pitch, walk. That sequence brought in one runner, and Carlos Beltran brought in another one with a 2 run big fly. Surprisingly, the Nats come back with 1 in the bottom of the 8th and 2 in the bottom of the 9th (on a Felipe Lopez homer) to tie it. In the 11th off Ryan Wagner, Carlos Delgado goes deep with what would end up being the winning run although the Mets would add one more for good measure.

The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings. New York (NL) won the hard
fought contest in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Carlos Delgado
initiated the scoring when he smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 32nd
of the season). David Wright stepped up next and he drew a walk. Wright was
safe on a stolen base. After another out, Ricky Ledee came to the plate and
doubled scoring the final run of the inning. New York (NL) managed 8 in
their victory.

Darren Oliver(2-2) allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Chad Bradford gained credit for his 1st save. Ryan Wagner(0-1) was

August 13, 2006: Red Sox 13 Orioles 4

The Red Sox break out of their offensive doldrums in a BIG way with a 13-4 victory over the Orioles to salvage one game of their 3 game series. Although they won by 9 runs, the victory wasn't easy as the Sox did not have the lead until the 7th. The O's came out swinging against Jon Lester and had 4 runs on the board in the first inning, which would end up being the only runs they scored. Manny was the star of the day for the Sox, hitting a 3 run homer to tie the game in the 3rd, a solo shot to take the lead in the 7th, and a 2 run dinger to start up the scoring in the 8th. A nod to Julian Tavarez, who followed up his last horrible relief appearance with 3 perfect innings and the win!

Designated hitter Manny Ramirez slammed 3 homeruns and had 6 RBI and Julian
Tavarez delivered 3 solid innings as the Boston Red Sox defeated the pathetic
Baltimore Orioles by a score of 13 to 4 at Fenway Park.

Ramirez was spectacular at the plate. The hometown fans showed their
appreciation with a standing ovation his last time at bat. He lofted a
three-run 'big-fly' in the 3rd inning, ripped a solo home run in the 7th
inning and blasted a two-run home run (his 35th of the season) in the 8th
inning. Boston ended up with 16 hits for the game while Baltimore had 6.

The win went to Tavarez(3-1) who allowed no runs in 3 innings. Todd
Williams(2-4) was the losing pitcher in relief. 'Some days it just all comes
together, and this was one of them' Ramirez said. 'I've been seeing the ball
pretty well lately.'

The Red Sox once again fail to score any runs against the Orioles, although on the plus side this one wasn't as bad as yesterday's 10-0 drubbing. Including the last 5 innings of the loss to the Royals 2 days ago, the Sox are scoreless in their last 23 innings.

They did manage to load the bases in the 9th, but there were already 2 outs and 3rd string catcher Corky Miller was due up. I pinch hit with Gabe Kapler but he grounded out softly to 3rd base.

Billy Traber gets the call from AAA New Orleans to take the traded Livan Hernandez' turn in the rotation, and he does something that Hernandez hadn't done in over a month - he wins the game! This was the game of 2-run homers by 'guys whose first names start with A' for the Nats, as Austin Kearns, Alex Escobar, and Alfonso Soriano all connected in different innings with a runner on ahead of them.

Oh and what of Livan Hernandez, now a Diamondback? He won in his first start for Arizona, allowing 4 earned runs over 7 2/3.

In a tight game it was the Washington Nationals 6, the New York (NL) Mets 4 at
RFK STADIUM.

Washington took the lead for good in the bottom of the 2nd inning scoring 2
runners on 1 hit. The critical plate appearance was by Austin Kearns who
came through for the home fans when he cleared the fences for a two-run home
run (his 25th of the season). New York (NL) threatened in the 9th but their
rally came up short.

The victory was credited to Billy Traber(2-1) who went 6 innings, allowing 2
runs. Tom Glavine(14-4) was the losing pitcher. He served up 3 gopher balls
in 6 innings.

August 9, 2006: Nationals 6 Marlins 5 (11)

The Marlins demonstrate why they're a last place team in an 11-inning loss to the Nationals. In the bottom of the 11th, Ryan Zimmerman and Austin Kearns both ground out and it looks like we're going to the 12th. Instead, Marlins pitcher Randy Messenger walks Ryan Church, and then catcher Brandon Harper hits a double to move Church to 3rd with the pitcher's spot due up. I pinch hit with Brian Schneider, my usual starting catcher, with the intention of bringing him into the game if it goes any further. With first base open and Felipe Lopez due up, the Marlins intentionally walk Schneider to create a force at any base. Seemed like a good enough idea until Messenger walked Lopez to walk in the winning run! I guess you would call that a walk-off walk?

Micah Bowie gets his first win for the Nats after getting out of a real jam in the top of the 11th. He first allowed a single and then an error by 2nd baseman Bernie Castro put runners on 2nd and 3rd with none out. Bowie got a strike out, pop out, and ground out to end the inning and keep the Marlins from scoring.

The Nationals take game 1 in the battle for last place in the NL East. Well I guess it's actually the battle for 4th place? The Nats and Marlins entered the day tied at 23 1/2 games back of the division leading Phillies.

Tony Armas Jr. had a weird day, pitching well but getting behind earrly on a 2 out, 3 run homer from Miguel Olivo. All 3 runs were unearned due to an error in the inning from Nats 2nd baseman Marlon Anderson. The Nats pulled within one of the Marlins in the 5th on a Nick Johnson solo shot, and pinch hitter Daryle Ward gave the Nats the lead in the next inning with a 2-out pinch hit 2-run home run. Jon Rauch and Chad Cordero protect the one run lead and the Nats come away with the victory, and 4th place!

One run was the difference at RFK STADIUM as the Washington Nationals defeated
the Florida Marlins 4 to 3.

Washington tallied 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. The key at-bat was
by Daryle Ward who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he bombed a
two-run dinger (his 3rd of the season). Florida made it exciting in the 9th,
but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Tony Armas Jr(6-5) got the win allowing 3 runs in 6 innings. Chad Cordero was
credited with his 24th save. Ricky Nolasco(7-7) suffered the loss. He

Jake Peavy struck out 15 batters and Mike Cameron connected with a 'big fly'
and had 4 RBI as the San Diego Padres man-handled the Washington Nationals -
the final score was 16 to 1.

Cameron had a good day at the plate. He stroked a base-hit bringing in a run
in the 3rd inning, banged out a single in the 5th inning and cleared the
fences for a two-run home run (his 18th of the season) in the 7th inning.
San Diego lit up the scoreboard in the 1st inning when they had 6 runs on 4
hits and the 3rd inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 4 hits. San Diego
banged out 14 on the afternoon.

Peavy(8-5) lasted until the end allowing 1 run for the win. Livan
Hernandez(9-12) was hit with the loss. He pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up
4 hits and 3 walks.

Bruce Bochy was asked about the performance of Peavy, 'He had his good stuff
out there this afternoon. The fans really get into it when the strikeouts
start mounting up - and that seems to give him even more adrenalin.'
