Mike Lowell had 4 hits and 3 RBI at Fenway Park as the Boston Red Sox beat the
Los Angeles(AL) Angels by the count of 11 to 5.
Boston jumped on top to stay in the bottom of the 4th inning when they scored
4 runs on 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Kevin Youkilis who thrilled the
crowd when he doubled bringing in two baserunners. Los Angeles(AL) was
out-hit by Boston, 13 hits to 7.
The victory was credited to Curt Schilling(9-10) who went 6 and 1/3 innings,
allowing 5 runs. John Lackey(10-7) was charged with the loss. He gave up 7
runs in 5 and 1/3 innings of work.

July 30, 2006: Nationals 20 Dodgers 11 (10)
Sunday, July 29, 2007
Going into the bottom of the 9th in this one, the Nationals had an 11-6 lead. 7 home runs later, the game would end as a 20-11 Nats victory. Here's how it happened: Travis Hughes had pitched the 8th for the Nationals and allowed 1 run. With the 5 run lead, I decided to try to get 2 innings out of him. Rafael Furcal leads off the inning with a walk, Kenny Lofton follows with a fly out, and JD Drew walks to put runners on 1st and 2nd. At this point I decide to not take any chances and go to my closer. Chad Cordero allows a double to Andre Either to score a run, which is followed by a Wilson Betemit home run to make it an 11-10 game. The next batter, James Loney, also homers to tie the game. Cesar Izturis singles, followed by a Toby Hall ground out for the 2nd out which sends Izturis to 2nd. Cordero then walks Russell Martin and Rafael Furcal to load the bases, but is able to get Lofton to ground out to end the inning. With the game tied, we head to extra innings. The Dodgers go with Giovanni Carrara out of the bullpen, a curious choice since Carrara had pitched a total of 4 2/3 innings in the previous 2 games in the series and given up 8 runs, 6 of them earned. He gets Ryan Zimmerman to ground out to start the inning, but Austin Kearns puts one over the fence to give the Nats a 12-11 lead. Next Alex Escobar singles, followed by Brian Schneider who doubles. With the pitcher's spot due up and a rally afoot, I pinch hit with Daryle Ward, who is intentionally walked to load the bases. Felipe Lopez singles to score one to make it 13-11, and Darrin Jackson then makes it count with a grand slam to give the Nats a 6 run lead. Alfonso Soriano flies out, but then the real fun begins: Nick Johnson, Ryan Zimmerman, and Austin Kearns go back-to-back-to-back with solo homers to make it 20-11!!! This was Kearns' 2nd home run of the inning, and 3rd of the game with a 3 run shot in the 5th. Alex Escobar hits a fly ball deep to left, but it's caught to end the inning. Chris Booker enters the game for the Nationals, and gets the Dodgers 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th. I checked it out, and 5 home runs is the major league record for homers in an inning. It had been done 5 times before, once in the AL and 4 times in the NL. Oddly enough, all 4 previous times in the NL had been against the Cincinnati Reds. This would be the first time it was done in extra innings. The 7 total home runs in the game for the Nationals is one shy of the team record, set in 1978 in a game where the Expos beat the Braves by a score of 19-0. That game featured 2 homers by Andre Dawson and 3 from Larry Parrish.

Right fielder Austin Kearns smashed 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Dodger Stadium
where the Washington Nationals beat the ice-cold Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers in
10 innings 20 to 11.
The score was knotted at 11 after nine innings. Washington won the game in the
10th inning. The crucial at-bat was provided by Damian Jackson who silenced
Dodger Stadium as he emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 2nd of
the season). Washington provided plenty of action in the 5th inning when
they had 5 runs on 3 hits and the 10th inning which saw them plate 9 runs on
8 hits. Washington had 23 hits for the game and Los Angeles(NL) had 13.
Chad Cordero(4-4) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 2/3 of an inning. Giovanni
Carrara(3-1) absorbed the loss in relief. He allowed 5 homeruns in 1 inning
of work.

I shuffled the lineup a bit for this game, it certainly seems to have worked out! Although I suspect that having 2 different guys go 4 for 5 would have worked no matter where they were in the lineup. Ryan Zimmerman has struggled in the 3rd spot in the lineup, so I dropped him to 5th and he went 4 for 5 with a triple and 3 runs scored. Felipe Lopez has been tremendous at getting on base, so I promoted him from 2nd to leadoff and he goes 2 for 3 with 2 steals and 2 runs scored. Lopez also executed a successful squeeze play, as did pitcher Mike O'Connor. The Nationals continue their recent success at stealing bases with 6 steals today. Also of note is the excellent bullpen performance, with 2 innings each out of Saul Rivera and Jon Rauch.

July 28, 2006: Nationals 7 Dodgers 1
The Nationals begin their west coast swing on a winning note, winning 7-1 over the Dodgers behind 7 shutout innings from Tony Armas Jr. In many of Armas's starts he pitches well for the first 4-5 innings but then tires and allows a big inning before getting pulled, or he gets into trouble with walks. Neither of those things happened in this one, and the reward is a victory to bring Armas's record to 5-5. The Nats were helped by walks from the Dodgers staff, as they score 2 runs in the 4th inning without a hit. Dodgers started Chad Billingsley walks 4 batters, walking in one run and allowing another to score on a ground ball. The Nats would add runs on solo shots from Zimmerman in the 5th and Church in the 6th, and would go on to score in 5 separate innings.

July 28, 2006: Red Sox 9 Angels 2
Saturday, July 28, 2007
The Red Sox erupt for 7 runs in the 3rd inning of this one and never look back. The scoring was led by Kevin Youkilis' 2 run homer and Jason Varitek's 3 run homer. Jon Lester gets through 6 innings allowing just 4 hits and no walks, but allows 2 walks to start the 7th before getting the hook. Still, his performance is good enough for his 5th win against 2 losses this season.

July 26, 2006: A's 12 Red Sox 5
This game started as a pitchers' duel for the first 5 innings, then turned into what was going to be an embarrassing loss for the Red Sox, then ended up as just a mostly embarrassing loss for the Red Sox. Through the first 4 innings, Dan Haren was holding the Red Sox hitless while the A's had gotten just 2 hits (but 4 walks) off Kyle Snyder. The Red Sox finally got through with a Doug Mirabelli double in the 5th, but failed to score, and the A's managed to load the bases in the bottom of the 5th and score on a sac fly. In the 6th, it all fell apart. Eric Chavez homered to lead off the inning, which forced Snyder's exit now that he was over 100 pitches. Craig Hansen entered in relief and walked the first batter but then induced a double play to erase the runner. He then allowed a single, a double, and a walk to load the bases. I go back to the bullpen for Rudy Seanez, who immediately allows a grand slam to Frank Thomas which makes the score 6-0 A's. As if that wasn't enough, Seanez proceeds to give up a single, a walk, and a triple (to Chavez) to make it 8-0. I go back to the bullpen for Jermaine Van Buren, who thankfully strikes out Bubba Crosby to end the inning. The A's would get to Van Buren in the 7th, when he allowed 2 walks, an RBI single, and a 3 run homer to Milton Bradley to make the score 12-0 A's. Haren would cruise until the 9th, when his pitch count was high enough that I would have pulled him. The A's manager sticks with him though and after a leadoff K of David Ortiz, he allows a home run to Manny and then successive singles to Kapler and Lowell. The A's finally go to the bullpen and lefty Randy Keisler, so I pinch hit with right handed monster Wily Mo Pena. Pena gets hit by a pitch, but Dougie responds with a grand slam home run! That was the end of the rally though, as Alex Cora grounds out and Coco Crisp strikes out to end the game. Side tangent: for the last 2 years, any time Doug Mirabelli hits a home run (and even sometimes when he doesn't) I exclaim "Dougie's going deep tonight!". This is why: http://chickenparm.blogspot.com/2005/06/dougies-diary.html Check it out, it's pretty funny.

The San Francisco Giants put 5 runs on the scoreboard in the 3rd inning and
nipped the Washington Nationals 6 to 5 at RFK STADIUM in a hard fought
contest.
San Francisco came up with 5 runs in the top of the 3rd inning when they had 4
base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Barry Bonds who helped
quiet the crowd when he doubled which was good for two runs. Washington
threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
The victory was credited to Matt Morris(6-10) who went 6 innings, allowing 3
runs. Brian Wilson recorded his 1st save. Ramon Ortiz(7-10) was given the
loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 1/3
innings.
Felipe Alou was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we
could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not
going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'

| Curt Schilling gets just his 2nd win in his last 10 starts, allowing just 3 hits over 8 innings and leading the Red Sox to a 5-1 win. Schilling's recent lack of wins has not entirely been his fault, however, since the Red Sox have averaged less than 3 runs a game of run support for Schill over his last 9 starts. Schilling has a much better time of it that A's starter Jason Windsor, who allowed a single, 3 walks, and a Youkilis home run in the first inning. Barry Zito dominated striking out 10 Boston batters and Nick Swisher left the
yard and had 5 RBI at McAfee Coliseum as the Oakland Athletics beat the
Boston Red Sox 10 to 6.
Swisher made sure the Oakland fans enjoyed themselves. He smacked a three-run
homer (his 21st of the season) in the 1st inning and banged out a single
scoring two baserunners in the 6th inning. Due to a poorly pitched ballgame,
scoring in 5 different innings was still not enough for Boston to come away
with the victory.
The win went to Zito(10-6) who allowed 6 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings. Josh
Beckett(10-8) absorbed the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 3 walks in 3 and 2/3
innings.
Zito was pleased with his performance. He noted, 'I had good zip on my
pitches. Just as important, my location was right on. The fans really got
into the game too - that always helps me. Now, if I can only do that again
in my next outing.'

July 23, 2006: Nationals 4 Cubs 3
Sunday, July 22, 2007
The Nationals win their 2nd straight game in their last at bat and complete a sweep of the Cubs with an exciting 4-3 victory. The 3 game series sweep is a first for the yeah, although the Nationals did sweep 2 game series from both the Braves and Marlins early in the season. The Nationals can credit clutch hitting for today's win, adding a run in the 7th, 8th, and 9th to tie the game, re-tie it after a Cubs run, and finally win it. Brian Schneider came through with a 2-out RBI single in the 7th, an Austin Kearns double in the 8th, and 3 straight singles in the 9th from pinch hitter Darlye Ward, Alfsonso Soriano, and Felipe Lopez. Lopez had 2 more stolen bases in this game to bring his season total to 40, including one that put him in scoring position for Kearns to knock him in in the 8th.

In an exciting finish the Washington Nationals pulled out a win over the
Chicago (NL) Cubs by a score of 4 to 3 at RFK STADIUM.
Washington scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After an
out was recorded, Daryle Ward lashed a single. Alfonso Soriano followed and
he singled. Soriano took second on the throw. Felipe Lopez then laced a
base-hit giving Washington the win much to the delight of the home town
crowd. Washington and Chicago (NL) each finished the afternoon with 7 hits.
The win went to Jon Rauch(3-1) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Mike
Wuertz(1-1) was given the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 run without
retiring a batter and saw his ERA increase from 1.74 to 2.61.
The Washington ballclub's record now stands at 45-54. Chicago (NL) has a
record of 38-59 after the loss.

July 23, 2006: Red Sox 9 Mariners 1
The Red Sox roll over the Mariners in the rubber game of their series. Jon Lester pitches 7 strong innings in this one, not showing any of the wildness that has plagued his young career thus far. Manny was the big offensive star, going 3 for 5 with 2 homers and 3 RBI. The Sox win combined with the Yankees loss to Toronto means that the Red Sox move into 1st place in the division for the first time this season. The Yankees had held 1st ever since overtaking the Blue Jays in late April. The Red Sox passed the Blue Jays for 2nd in late May and had been as close as 1.5 games out in early June but were 6 games out in early July, just 3 weeks ago. Although the Sox have had a fantastic July, I'm not sure how long they can hold on with a current rotation of Schilling/Beckett/Lester/Snyder/???

Ramon Hernandez cracked a homer and had 6 RBI at Tropicana Field as the
Baltimore Orioles embarrassed the Tampa Bay Devil Rays by the lopsided score
of 31 to 8.
Hernandez was in a groove all day. The Tampa Bay fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box. He doubled which plated a run in the 6th
inning, lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 15th of the season) in the 7th
inning and slapped a single which was good for two runs in the 8th inning.
Baltimore bats were hot in the 6th inning which saw them plate 6 runs on 6
hits, the 7th inning when they had 6 runs on 6 hits and the 8th inning with 7
runs on 8 hits. The Baltimore offense was as consistent as it was powerful.
They scored in every inning, making a joke of the Tampa Bay pitching.
The win was credited to Rodrigo Lopez(3-11) who went 7 and 1/3 innings
allowing 5 runs. Tim Corcoran(1-3) took the loss. He allowed 6 hits and no
walks in 1 and 1/3 innings.
