August 9, 2006: Nationals 6 Marlins 5 (11)
Tuesday, August 21, 2007
| The Marlins demonstrate why they're a last place team in an 11-inning loss to the Nationals. In the bottom of the 11th, Ryan Zimmerman and Austin Kearns both ground out and it looks like we're going to the 12th. Instead, Marlins pitcher Randy Messenger walks Ryan Church, and then catcher Brandon Harper hits a double to move Church to 3rd with the pitcher's spot due up. I pinch hit with Brian Schneider, my usual starting catcher, with the intention of bringing him into the game if it goes any further. With first base open and Felipe Lopez due up, the Marlins intentionally walk Schneider to create a force at any base. Seemed like a good enough idea until Messenger walked Lopez to walk in the winning run! I guess you would call that a walk-off walk? Micah Bowie gets his first win for the Nats after getting out of a real jam in the top of the 11th. He first allowed a single and then an error by 2nd baseman Bernie Castro put runners on 2nd and 3rd with none out. Bowie got a strike out, pop out, and ground out to end the inning and keep the Marlins from scoring. |
