In a close game the Boston Red Sox got by the Detroit Tigers by the score of 6
to 4.
Boston had 5 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 7th inning with the
help of 5 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Mark Loretta who
brought a roar from the partisan Fenway Park fans when he slapped a base-hit
which was good for two runs. Detroit had a chance to come back in the 9th
but they came up short.
David Wells(3-2) went 7 innings allowing 4 runs for the win. Wells got help
from Jonathan Papelbon who was credited with his 26th save. Wil Ledezma(2-5)
took the loss in relief. He was unable to retire a batter giving up 2 hits
and 1 walk.
'It was a tough one to lose' said Jim Leyland 'We'll get them next time out.'
