September 24, 2006: Red Sox 9 Blue Jays 6 (10)
Wednesday, October 31, 2007
It takes 10 innings and 8 Red Sox pitchers, but the Red Sox pull off the win over the Blue Jays to stay alive in the playoff race. Let's start in the 5th inning with the Red Sox down 5-2. Starter Kyle Snyder has already been pulled and the Red Sox need some runs. They start the inning with a Gabe Kapler walk, then get 2 outs before Mark Loretta singles to move Kapler to 3rd. Next up is David Ortiz, and he hits a shot over the fence to tie the game. The Blue Jays would load the bases off Lenny Dinardo in the bottom of the inning, but Javier Lopez saves the Sox by coming into the game and getting Russ Adams to ground out to end the inning. Both teams would score in the 6th, but it could have been much worse for the Sox. Bryan Corey entered after Craig Hansen had allowed a single and a walk to load the bases, and Corey got a sac fly and a ground out to end the inning. Corey would get through the 7th with ease and I went with Craig Breslow to start the 8th. He got the first out but then allowed a single to Vernon Wells. Wells would steal 2nd, but then he would try to steal 3rd and get caught doing so! This would not be Wells' last mistake in this game. Brselow struck out Lyle Overbay to end the inning. Fast forward to the 10th...Ortiz and Manny are due up. I decided to make Manny start even though he was out with his BS injury IRL. My Sox still have playoff hopes, I need Manny! Unfortunately, Ortiz struck out and Manny grounded out but Mike Lowell managed to walk to spark the Sox rally. Varitek and Wily Mo Pena would follow with singles to load the bases, and the Blue Jays would pull lefty Scott Downs in favor of righty Brian Tallet with Gabe Kapler due up. I pinch hit with Trot Nixon, who hits a deep fly ball that looks like it's going to be caught by Vernon Wells...but he muffs it and all 3 runs score! Wells would come up in the bottom of the 10th with runners on 2nd and 3rd and a chance at redemption, but Paps comes in from the bullpen and induces the ground out to end the game. The Red Sox playoff hopes are bleak, but still possible. By handing the Blue Jays a loss, the Sox actually clinched the division for the Yankees, who also lost today. Detroit also clinched a playoff spot today - they can not finish worse than anyone but the Twins and Yankees, which would still make the Tigers the wild card. The Tigers have a 4.5 game lead (magic number=7) on the Twins. The Twins have a 4 game lead over the Blue Jays and a 5.5 game lead over the Sox. The Sox have 6 to play while the Twins and Jays have 7. This means that the Twins magic number to eliminate the Sox from playoff contention is 2.

WEB GEMS- Bot 3rd: Jason Varitek blocked the plate, saving a run!
David Ortiz cracked a homer and had 3 RBI at Rogers Centre where the
incredible Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays in 10 innings by the
score of 9 to 6.
The game was deadlocked at 6 after nine full innings. Boston came out the
victor in the 10th inning. After two were out Mike Lowell kicked off the
action when he drew a walk. Jason Varitek next to the plate and he slapped a
single. Wily Mo Pena then singled to load the bases. Trot Nixon came up and
he reached on an error clearing all three ducks off the pond. Toronto had 18
hits in the game while Boston had 11, but Boston had the more timely hits.
Keith Foulke(4-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 2/3 innings and
allowing no runs. Foulke got relief help from Jonathan Papelbon who gained
credit for his 39th save. Scott Downs(5-7) was the loser in relief.

September 23, 2006: Red Sox 11 Blue Jays 10
Monday, October 29, 2007
An ugly win for the Sox, but a win nonetheless! The Sox score in 5 different innings while the Jays score in 6 different innings, and the Jays outhit the Sox 19-14. This one looked like it was going to be an easy win for the Sox when they staked out to a 7-2 lead in the 4th, but the Blue Jays roared right back with consecutive homers to chase Devern Hansack in the 4th and then Lenny Dinardo did little to stop the bleeding. Dinardo ends up giving up 3 runs and 6 hits in just 2/3 of an inning, and it would be tied at 7 by the end of the 5th. Neither team would score in the 6th, but the Sox would strike for 4 runs in the top of the 7th. It's interesting to note that they did it on 4 consecutive singles - Trot Nixon singled to lead off the inning, then pinch runner Coco Crisp stole 2nd. Varitek struck out but Wily Mo Pena was intentionally walked. Eric Hinske singles to score Crisp and move Pena to 3rd, pinch hitter Carlos Pena singled to score Wily Mo and move Hinske to 2nd, pinch hitter Gabe Kapler singled to score Hinske and move Carlos to 3rd, and finally Kevin Youkilis would single to score Carlos and send Kapler to 2nd. David Ortiz would walk to load the bases, but both Mike Lowell and Coco Crisp would fail to come through. The Foulke/Timlin/Papelbon combination would work an inning each and give up 3 runs total, but it's enough to put this one in the win column for the Sox. The Red Sox win over the Blue Jays helped the Yankees, whose magic number now stands at 1. However, the Sox gained a game on both the Twins and Blue Jays in the wild card race and are now 5.5 back with 7 to play.

September 22, 2006: Mets 2 Nationals 1 (10)
Sunday, October 28, 2007
The Nationals put together a 9th inning comeback in a tight game with the Mets, but it ends up all for naught when Carlos Delgado leads off the 10th with a walkoff home run. El Duque was mowing down the Nats hitters all day, but fortunately the only Mets scoring had been a 4th inning home run by David Wright. In the 9th with Billy Wagner in, the Nats led off the inning with a Nick Johnson walk. Next up was Ryan Zimmerman, whose 17 game hitting streak was on the line since he was 0 for 3 with 3 K's. He doubles to extend the hitting streak but more importantly to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Jose Vidro grounds to the shortstop and I attempt to score on a 1-12 safe chance. It comes up a 14 so Johnson is out at the plate, but the Nats still have runners on 1st and 3rd with just one out. Brian Schneider then singles to score the tying run, but pinch hitters Brandon Harper and Ryan Church fail to come through and we go to the 10th where Delgado would win it for the Mets. and what of Austin Kearns and his 21 game hitting streak? It crashes and burns in grand fashion, as Kearns goes 0 for 5 with 5 strikeouts! The Mets win means that they keep their 1 game lead over the Phillies for the division.

September 21, 2006: Twins 4 Red Sox 0
Saturday, October 27, 2007
The Red Sox get shut down by Johan Santana, who earns his 21st win of the season in a 4-0 shutout. He gets relief help from Joe Nathan who earns his 47th save. Santana, Nathan, and AL batting leader Joe Mauer are a lot of the reason why the Twins are leading the AL wild card race by 3 games over the Blue Jays. The Red Sox are now 5.5 games back after getting swept in this series. In the NL, all 4 playoff teams are set. The Mets and Padres won and the Rockies lost, meaning the Padres win the NL West and the Mets and Phillies both clinch playoff spots. The Phillies are one game back of the Mets in the NL East. In the AL, the Yankees are on the verge of clinching the East with a magic number of 3. The Twins are 3.5 back of the Tigers in the Central, while the Rangers are just a half game back of the A's in the west.

September 20, 2006: Nationals 5 Braves 3
This was another game where the Nats were down early, came back to tie it, and went ahead in the late innings and held on for the win. However, this one could have gone quite differently...in the top of the 6th, the Braves had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out and the pitcher's spot due up. They pinch hit with Daryle Ward, who is a pretty decent pinch hitter, which I know because he spent most of this season on the Nationals. Since first is open, I intentionally walk him. Now there is the lefty Pete Orr due up and Nats starter Ramon Ortiz has already allowed 9 hits and 2 home runs in the game, so I bring in Billy Traber, the one lefty in my pen. Traber gets Orr to fly out to left and the Braves send the runner from third. Soriano uncorks a throw and gets the runner at the plate! No runs cross the plate, the game remains tied, and the Nats eventually strike with a 7th inning homer from Soriano. The Braves get a runner on in the 8th but he gets erased when caught stealing 2nd, and Chad Cordero shuts them down in the 9th with 2 K's for his 35th save of the season. Also, both Austin Kearns and Ryan Zimmerman got hits, so their hitting streaks extend to 21 and 17 games respectively. In league news, the Rockies are still clinging to playoff hopes and keeping the Mets, Phillies, and Padres from clinching playoff spots. All 3 of those teams sit at 91 wins while the Rockies are at 81 wins with 10 left to play. That means that all 3 teams have magic numbers of 1: for the Mets and Phillies, it's a playoff spot; for the Padres, it's the NL West. The Phillies now sit just a half game back of the Mets for the NL East.

the mighty Minnesota Twins beat the Boston Red Sox 9 to 3.
Cuddyer had a big day with his bat. He lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his
24th of the season) in the 2nd inning, doubled which was good for two runs in
the 3rd inning, tripled knocking in a run in the 7th inning and hit a single
in the 9th inning. Minnesota had 13 hits overall, while Boston had 8.
The win went to Boof Bonser(7-3) who allowed 2 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. The
loss was charged to Curt Schilling(14-12). He was not very effective,
surrendering 6 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.

September 19, 2006: Braves 6 Nationals 3
One streak ended and two continued with this 6-3 loss to the Braves. First, the streak that ended: the Nats/Expos 5 year history of making the playoffs. With this loss, the Nats scant playoff 2006 playoff hopes evaporated. Now, the streaks that continued - Austin Kearns and Ryan Zimmerman's hitting streaks. The Nats were no-hit into the 6th inning in this one, but finally in the 9th both Kearns and Zimmerman were able to extend their streaks to 20 and 16 games, respectively. In other NL playoff news, the Mets and Padres have each clinched at least a tie for a playoff spot, as they both lead the Rockies by 11 in the win column and the Rockies have 11 to play. The Phillies are just 1.5 back of the Mets and 10 ahead of the Rockies for the wild card, so everyone should clinch in pretty short order.

September 18, 2006: Nationals 5 Braves 3
The Nationals took a while to get it going in this game, but they finally break through for 3 in the 5th and hold on for the 5-3 win. The 3 runs are knocked in by unlikely sources - a Melvin Dorta double, and a George Lombard pinch hit home run. That is the 10th pinch hit home run this year for the Nationals, the 2nd by Lombard. In other league news, the first playoff spot is set as the Houston Astros beat the 2nd place Reds to win the division. The Mets lost while the Rockies won, so the Mets magic number to clinch a playoff spot is still 2.

September 17, 2006: Red Sox 11 Yankees 8 (10)
This game had it all. A starter who gets shelled, impressive long relief from an unlikely source, a Red Sox comeback, the Yankees reestablish the lead, the Red Sox come back again off Mariano Rivera, a Manny Ramirez September sighting, extra innings, and a Sox win! We'll start in the top of the 8th, right after Craig Hansen and Mike Timlin have allowed a couple Yankee runs to give the Yanks an 8-4 lead. Trot Nixon leads off the inning with a walk and I pinch run with Gabe Kapler. Varitek grounds it to Giambi at first, but he muffs it and Varitek reaches on the error. The Yankees go to Rivera, hoping for the 6 out save (which he does often). David Murphy (who was 2 for 3 on the day at this point) flies out, but Eric Hinske singles to load the bases. Alex Cora hits a sac fly to score Kapler, then Coco Crisp comes through with a single to score Tek. Mark Loretta pops out to end the inning, but now it's 8-6 Yanks. Timlin puts the Yanks down in order in the bottom of the 8th, so we go to the 9th. Ortiz leads off the inning by taking his 3rd walk of the game. Lowell pops out, but Kapler singles to put runners at 1st and 2nd. Varitek then singles to load the bases. With Murphy up, I give my first thought to pinch hitting with Manny. Now Manny did not start a game between 9/9 and 9/30, and made just one pinch hitting appearance in that time. I remember that Manny could have played, as his injury was kind of undefined and no one pushed it because the Sox were out of the playoff hunt. Well, my Sox are just a couple games out of the wild card race so if I need Manny, he's going to pinch hit. I decide to wait though and let Murphy hit because he's a lefty and had been having a good game. Murphy comes through with a fly ball deep enough to score Ortiz, and it's just a one run game but now there are 2 out. Hinske walks to re-load the bases, and with Alex Cora up it's time to wake up Manny. Manny singles up the middle to score the tying run! Unfortunately, Coco Crisp pops out to end the inning. Keith Foulke comes in and does walk a couple guys, but gets the 3 outs without the Yankees scoring and we go to extra frames. In the top of the 10th with Rivera still in the game, Mark Loretta leads off with a fly out. Ortiz walks for the 4th time in the game and Mike Lowell makes it count by putting one in the seats, giving the Sox the lead for the first time in the game. Kyle Farnsworth relieves Rivera, but Kapler would single and Varitek would reach again on an error, this time a 2-base error by 3B Nick Green (A-Rod had the night off). The Yankees replace Farnsworth with Scott Proctor, but David Murphy would hit another sac fly to make it 11-8, Hinske would be intentionally walked to load the bases, then Alex Gonzalez lines out to end the inning. Enter Papelbon, who walks a batter but gets the 3 outs for his 37th save. After splitting doubleheaders on consecutive days, the Sox remain 9.5 games back of the Yankees, one half game behind the Blue Jays who sit in 2nd place. The Sox are also 3rd in the wild card race but just 2.5 games behind the Twins, with whom they begin a 3 game series at home after an off day. The wild card will be a 3-team race, since the next closest team (the Rangers) is 12 games behind the Sox and therefore already eliminated with 2 weeks left to play. The Rangers are just one game behind the A's for the west division lead, with the Angels sitting at 4 out. In the Central, the Tigers are 5 up on the Twins.

Bryan Corey came through with a solid 4 innings at Yankee Stadium where the
Boston Red Sox beat the New York (AL) Yankees in 10 innings by the score of
11 to 8.
The game was deadlocked at 8 after nine full innings. Boston won the hard
fought contest in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, David Ortiz
got things rolling when he drew a walk. Mike Lowell came next and he cleared
the fences for a two-run home run (his 18th of the season). Gabe Kapler then
laced a one-base hit. Jason Varitek followed and he reached on an error.
David Murphy came to the plate and hit a deep fly scoring the final run of
the inning. Boston and New York (AL) each finished the night with 14 hits.
Keith Foulke(3-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing
no runs. Jonathan Papelbon gained credit for his 37th save. Mariano
Rivera(0-6) suffered the loss in relief. He allowed 6 hits and 3 walks in 2
and 1/3 innings.

September 17, 2006: Nationals 3 Brewers 2
Saturday, October 20, 2007
The Nationals bats were mostly silent in this one, but came alive at just the right time. Felipe Lopez led off the bottom of the ninth with a double, and Austin Kearns followed it up with a 2 run shot to right-center to win the game for the Nats. It's a shame that Nats starter Mike O'Connor was not able to get the win, as he contributes his best (and longest) outing of the year by allowing just 4 hits and 1 earned run over 8 innings. Also of note: Ryan Zimmerman contributed the error that led to the Brewers first run in the 2nd, but made up for it by doubling to lead off the the bottom of the same inning and then advancing to 3rd and scoring on consecutive ground outs. With 2 weeks left in the season, the National League playoff race is a bit anti-climactic. The only race where the magic number is not under 5 is the East, but the 2nd place Phillies have all but wrapped up the wild card. The Nats are 3rd in the wild card race, but would need to win all their remaining games and have the Phillies lose all their remaining games to force a tiebreaker. The Phillies wild card magic number is just 4 over the Rockies. Since the Mets magic number to clinch a playoff spot is just 2, we should see the NL playoff teams set within just a few days, but since just 3 games separate all 4 teams we will definitely see some jockeying for seeding.

Mike O'Connor came through with a solid 8 innings at RFK STADIUM as the
Washington Nationals staged a comeback win over the woeful Milwaukee Brewers
by the count of 3 to 2.
Washington won the game with a rally in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2
runs on 2 hits. Felipe Lopez kicked off the action when he doubled. Austin
Kearns stepped up next and he bombed a two-run dinger (his 28th of the
season) giving Washington the victory and sending the 12,731 home-town fans
home happy. Washington ended up with 7 hits for the game while Milwaukee had
4.
Saul Rivera(4-6) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Brian
Shouse(2-2) was charged with the loss in relief. Frank Robinson was
ebullient after the game, 'It's great to win a hard fought game like that.
Our guys just weren't going to be denied. And did you see the fans - they
were going wild! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win this afternoon!'

The Yankees managed to hit 2 grand slams in consecutive innings in this one - by Craig Wilson off Kyle Snyder in the 3rd, and by A-Rod off Lenny Dinardo in the 4th. The Sox managed to load the bases in both the 6th and 9th innings, but couldn't put across a single run. Alex Rodriguez added four ribbies to his seasonal total with one swing of the
bat as the New York (AL) Yankees man-handled the Boston Red Sox - the final
score was 14 to 0.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Rodriguez. He doubled in the 3rd inning, launched a Grand Slam
homerun (his 34th of the season) in the 4th inning and laced a base-knock in
the 6th inning. For the game New York (AL) out-hit Boston 17 to 6.
The victory went to Jaret Wright(10-5) who went 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing no
runs. Kyle Snyder(1-6) was hit with the loss. He was not very effective,
surrendering 6 runs in 3 innings.
The winning ways continue for New York (AL). They now have a record of 9-1 in
recent days. With the loss, Boston has a record of 7-3 lately, 88-61
overall.
