October 22, 2006: Astros 7 Twins 3 (series tied, 1-1)

Despite getting outhit, the Astros get the 7-3 win in game 2 to even the World Series at a game apiece. The Astros did it all with the long ball. Craig Biggio started the scoring in the 2nd on a 2 run homer which was immediately followed by a Brad Ausmus solo shot, Biggio got another 2 run shot in the 6th, and Mike Lamb hit a solo homer in the 7th and again in the 9th.

Astros starter Roy Oswalt allowed 10 hits over 7 innings, but only allowed 2 runs and earned the win. Brad Lidge pitched a perfect 8th but struggled in the 9th, which enabled Dan Wheeler to earn the save by inducing a double play to end the game.

Originally I was going to use Andy Pettitte in game 3 for the Astros, but instead I decided to push Clemens up to game 3 on normal rest which would set him up for a potential game 7 start. Clemens has been much better thus far in the playoffs. The Twins will counter with Brad Radke.

October 21, 2006: Twins 8 Astros 1 (Twins lead series, 1-0)

The Twins make game 1 of the World Series look easy, as they win 8-1 over the Astros behind the left arm of Johan Santana. Santana didn't pitch a no-hitter like he did last time out, but he did pitch a complete game. He scattered 6 hits over the 9 innings, striking out 8 and walking none. The lone Astro run was scored in the 1st when #2 hitter Morgan Ensberg went deep.

The Twins did most of their damage with a 7 run 2nd. Astro starter Wandy Rodriguez allowed 4 singles, 2 walks and 4 runs before being pulled with 2 outs in favor of Chad Qualls. Qualls allowed 2 more singles and a walk before getting the 3rd out, allowing 4 mroe runs, 2 of which were charged to Rodriguez.

Boof Bonser will take on Roy Oswalt in game 2. Both have made 3 starts this postseason, while Oswalt also made a relief appearance. Bonser is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA. Oswalt is 2-1 with a 2.74 ERA.

early on that we were going to be in for a long night. Santana brought his

probably only made one or two bad pitches the entire game!

October 19, 2006: Astros 1 Padres 0 (Astros win series, 4-3)

The Houston Astros are National League champions and will face the Minnesota Twins in the World Series after today's remarkable game 7 in the NLCS. The stage was set with craft veterans David Wells and Roger Clemens facing one another, Clemens on 3 days rest after planned game 7 starter Roy Oswalt was called into emergency relief in the wild 20 inning game 6. The game was everything one could have hoped for out of 2 guys who know how to win in the playoffs, as a 2nd inning Astros run ends up being the only one scored in a 1-0 win. Wells went 7 innings, allowing just 5 hits and the one run. Clemens was even more remarkable - a complete game shutout, allowing just 3 hits while walking 3 and striking out 7.

The lone run scored thanks to 2 consecutive hits in the 2nd - a Luke Scott double followed by a Craig Biggio single. It was the only time in this game that 2 consecutive batters would reach base for either team. Scott finished a homer shy of the cycle, as he had 3 of the Astros 6 hits.

Luke Scott is the series MVP - besides scoring the winning run in this game, he hit .355 for the series with 3 triples, 2 homers and 6 RBI. Clemens might seem like a good choice as well, but his game 7 heroics still can't make us overlook his game 4 implosion when he allowed 5 runs in just 1/3 of an inning. Of course, his brief stint in that game may have been a blessing to help his stamina on 3 days rest in game 7.

Something I thought of during the game...Wells and Clemens were once traded for each other. After Clemens' 2 years in Toronto, he was traded to the Yankees for Wells.

Also of note...Clemens got the win in the deciding game 5 of the Astros' NLDS series with the Mets, although he only went 5 innings in that one.

Due to Oswalt's unexpected relief appearance and Clemens' being pushed up a day, #4 starter Wandy Rodriguez will get the start in game 1 of the World Series. Johan Santana goes for the Twins. Oswalt will start game 2 on what would be 3 days rest from his 3 inning relief appearance, then Pettitte and Clemens will handle games 3 and 4 on an extra days rest each.

October 18, 2006: Astros 9 Padres 5 (20) (series tied, 3-3)

OH MY GOD! That is really all that can be said after a game 6 in which the Astros came back to tie it in the 9th and then it took 11 more innings before either team could cross the plate again. I've included the play account so you can follow the whole progression of events.

Things to note: Roy Oswalt, who pitched 3 innings of relief, was supposed to be the game 7 starter. The computer manager brought him in to pinch hit, which made sense because no one else was available and Oswalt is a 6N. It didn't make sense to me to have him actually pitch, especially since there were 2 relievers still in the pen in addition to the game 4 and 5 starters. Springer eventually entered the game, but Brad Lidge never did...which I was ok with because Lidge had sucked up the last 2 games. For the Padres, they went to Peavy who had started game 5 but kept Wells on the shelf for his game 7 start. I think now I will start Clemens in game 7 for the Astros on short rest, and I'm going to manaually manage both teams to make sure the computer doesn't make any boneheaded pitching moves.

The score was tied at 5 after nine. Finally, Houston pulled the game out in

the crowd when he laced a one-base hit bringing in two baserunners. Despite
losing, San Diego out-hit Houston 19 to 16.

The win was credited to Russ Springer(2-0) who went 3 innings allowing no
runs. Jake Peavy(1-1) ended up with the loss in relief. Although losing the

October 16, 2006: Padres 7 Astros 6 (Padres lead series, 3-2)

Brad Lidge blows a save and allows the Padres to tie the game for the 2nd straight day, but this time the Astros lose in 12 instead of winning in 9. The Padres got 2 runs in the top of the 1st but the Astros started out hotter in this game with 4 straight hits, then after 2 outs Adam Everett came through with a 3 run homer that was the death knell for Pads starter Jake Peavy. Luke Scott made it 6-2 with a solo shot in the 3rd, then the Padres came back with runs in the top of the 4th (a Ryan Klesko pinch hit double with a runner on) and the 5th (a Mike Piazza solo HR). The 6-4 Astros lead would stand until the 9th when Lidge entered to try to save it. Lidge walked a batter between the first 2 outs, but it looked like he was going to be ok until pinch hitter Rob Bowen took him deep to left to tie the game. The Astros would get a runner to 2nd with 2 outs in both the 9th and the 11th, but it was Russell Branyan's solo homer to lead off the 12th that ended up being enough to win the game for the Padres.

The series moves back to San Diego for game 6. Andy Pettitte gets the must-win assignment for the Astros against Chris Young.

October 15, 2006: Astros 10 Padres 8 (series tied, 2-2)

The NLCS is all tied up after the Astros get the exciting 10-8 win on a walk-off Brad Ausmus homer in the 9th. The Padres had staked out to a 5 run lead in the 1st off Astro starter Roger Clemens, who allowed 4 hits and 2 walks in just 1/3 of an inning. The Astros got one back in the bottom of the 1st on a Luke Scott RBI triple, then put up a 5 run inning of their own in the 3rd. The Astros 3rd is interesting - pinch hitter Morgan Ensberg led off the inning with a walk, then Willy Tavarez lined out. Then comes a team natural cycle: Mike Lamb singled, Lance Berkman doubled, Luke Scott tripled, and Aubrey Huff hit a home run. Berkman got an RBI, while Scott and Huff each got 2. The Astros would add another in the 5th on a Berkman solo shot and in the 7th on an Ausmus single following a Luke Scott single. (Scott finished a homer short of a cycle of his own). In the 8th, the Padres would get runners to 1st and 2nd with 2 outs, which brings in Brad Lidge for the 4 out save. Instead, Lidge walks pinch hitter Todd Walker to load the bases and then walks Dave Roberts to make it 8-6. The next batter is Brian Giles, who singles to knock in 2 runs and tie the game! Lidge would be pulled and Russ Springer would get Adrian Gonzalez to fly out to end the threat.

The Astros would get a Mike Lamb triple with 1 out in the 8th, but couldn't push him across the plate. In the 9th, Craig Biggio walks with one out, he is erased on an Adam Everett fielder's choice, Everett steals 2nd, and Ausmus clears the fences to win the game and tie the series!

The Astros will try to make it a sweep in Houston in game 5. Wandy Rodriguez will make his 1st playoff start against Jake Peavy.

October 15, 2006: Twins 11 Rangers 4 (Twins win series, 4-1)

The Minnesota Twins are the 2006 American League champions after a convincing 11-4 game 5 win over the Rangers. Twins starter Boof Bonser had a strong outing, lasting into the 9th before tiring. The Twins gave him 6 runs in the 1st, so the outcome of this one was never really in doubt. Rangers starter Kevin Millwood was chased from the game before the 1st inning was over thanks to 4 hits, a walk, a hit batsman, and 6 runs allowed. The death blow was a 3-run home run by Phil Nevin. The Twins would add 5 more in the 6th and enjoyed an 11-1 lead until the Rangers added 3 in the 9th on a Mark DeRosa homer. Ian Kinsler singled to attempt to extend the 1-out rally, but then Rod Barajas grounded to 2nd and the Twins infield turned the DP and started celebrating.

The Twins will await the winner of the Astros-Padres NLCS, and will start ALCS MVP Johan Santana on 7 days rest in game 1 of the World Series.

October 14, 2006: Rangers 5 Twins 3 (11) (Twins lead series, 3-1)

It takes 11 innings, but the Rangers manage to avert the series sweep with the 5-3 win over the Twins. The Twins got 3 in the 6th to break a scoreless tie in this one, but the Rangers immediately set to work on the comeback. They got a solo homer from Ian Kinsler in the 7th, then 2 more in the 8th off a Gary Matthews Jr double, 2 ground outs to advance and then score Matthews, and a Carlos Lee homer to tie it. The Rangers would load the bases in the 9th off Pat Neshek, but the Twins go to Juan Rincon and he gets Mark Teixeira to fly out to end the threat.

Finally in the 11th, Rod Barajas leads off with a single. Gerald Laird then grounds into a double play to kill the rally, but Matthews sparks it again with a single. Michael Young follows with a double to send Matthews to 3rd. The Twins go to Matt Guerrier to face Teixeira, but he unleashes a wild pitch to allow Matthews to score the go-ahead run! Teixeira then singles to knock in another run before Lee grounds out to end the inning. Akinora Otsuka comes in and gets 3 straight fly outs in the bottom of the 11th to seal the win.

Game 5 will be a rematch of game 1 starters - Kevin Millwood vs. Boof Bonser.
