April 27, 2006: Nationals 7 Cardinals 5
Saturday, March 31, 2007
Mike O'Connor wins in his major league debut as the Nationals beat the world champion Cardinals by the score of 7-5. Cards starter Sidney Ponson was awful in his start and was pulled after allowing 5 hits, 5 runs, and 2 walks and getting just one out. Brad Thompson came in and gave the Cardinals 4 2/3 innings of no hit relief, but it was too late. The Nationals got 2 more in the 8th and Chad Cordero slammed the door in the 9th for the save.

April 27, 2006: Red Sox 3 Indians 2
Josh Beckett gets his first win in a Red Sox uniform by going 7 strong with 10 strikeouts and, surprisingly, no home runs allowed! Notice that his ERA is down to a still-shitty 8.19. Manny goes 0 for 5 in this one to break his 15 game hitting streak, and the usually sure fielding Red Sox commit 2 errors to bring their season total to just 5 in 22 games.

Edwin Encarnacion hit one over the fence and had 4 RBI and Elizardo Ramirez
was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as
the blistering-hot Cincinnati Reds outscored the Washington Nationals 9 to
1.
Encarnacion had a good evening at the plate. He lifted one out of the park
for a two run home run (his 3rd of the season) in the 1st inning and doubled
bringing in two baserunners in the 7th inning. Cincinnati had 12 hits for
the night.
Ramirez(1-0) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. Livan
Hernandez(0-5) took the loss. He surrendered 6 runs and 7 hits in 1 and 1/3
innings.
With the win, Cincinnati continued their winning ways; their streak now stands
at 7 games and counting. Frank Robinson was upset but philosophical about the
loss. 'Sometimes you run into a team that's on a roll. This was one of
those times.'

April 23, 2006: Nationals 5 Braves 4 (12)
The Nationals are actually starting to play like the 2005 version of the Nationals, hitting the ball with at least some regularity and getting good pitching. T After allowing 3 runs in the early innings, the Nationals crawl back into it with 3 in the 4th. The Braves got a runner to 3rd in the 8th when Martin Prado singled up the middle and Nats pitcher Mike Stanton mishandled the ball. The Braves went to pinch hitter Edgar Renteria, while I went with Gary Majewski out of the bullpen. Renteria singled to score the go-ahead run and I thought the Nats might be all done. With 2 outs in the 9th, Nick Johnson comes through with the lumber and puts one in the seats to tie the game. Majewski and Chad Cordero shut down the Braves in extra frames, and Jose Vidro gets into the longball game as well with a walk-off homer to lead off the 12th. The Nats sit in 4th place, one game behind the Braves but 6 games behind the division leading Mets.

One run was the difference at RFK STADIUM as the Washington Nationals defeated
the Atlanta Braves in 12 innings 5 to 4.
The score was tied at 4 after nine. Washington won it in the 12th inning.
Jose Vidro smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 3rd of the season) giving
Washington the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. Although
they lost, Atlanta did out-hit Washington 12 to 9.
Chad Cordero(1-0) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the win. Mike
Remlinger(2-1) was hit with the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning and
surrendered 1 hit and no walks.

This game is a perfect illustration of the fallacy of W-L record as a measure of comparing pitchers. There's no way that Vag deserves a win in this game, yet he gets one. (Side note: in the real 2006 season, Matt Clement would get unexplained injuries that ended up being a case of dead arm. He is still uncertain for the 2007 season, even though the Sox will pay him $9.5M in 2007. As a result, I started making jokes about how he couldn't pitch because he had a sore vagina. and thus, the nickname of "Vag" was born. Since he's decided to suck in my SOM replay, the Vag nickname will live on) The Sox got 4 right away in this one off Blue Jays starter Josh Towers, who was wisely pulled early to stop the bleeding. The Blue Jays clawed back and took the lead in the 4th, which the Red Sox would tie in the 6th when Manny Ramirez led off the inning with a solo home run. 9 batters later, Ramirez was up again with only one out and the Red Sox had a 4 run lead. The big hit in the inning belongs to Alex Gonzalez, who hit a bases loaded double that would score the winning runner.

This is one that the Sox let get away even though they got badly outhit by the Blue Jays. It seems that with 18 hits the Blue Jays should have scored more runs! In fact the line score was pretty bizarre early in the game - after 4, the Red Sox had 2 runs on 1 hit while the Blue Jays had 1 run on 8 hits.

The sudden surge in hitting from the 4th, 5th, and 6th spots in the lineup has a lot to do with the Nationals recent success - today, #4 hitter Jose Guillen had a 3 run home run, #5 hitter Ryan Zimmerman went 4 for 4, and #6 hitter Ryan Church went 2 for 3 with a 2 run homer. |

In a two run game the Washington Nationals got by the Philadelphia Phillies by
the score of 5 to 3.
In the top of the 3rd inning Washington scored 3 runs. That scoring would be
all that was needed. Philadelphia threatened in the 9th but their rally came
up short.
Billy Traber(1-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 6 innings. Chad Cordero gained
credit for his 2nd save. Ryan Madson(2-1) ended up with the loss.

April 20, 2006: Red Sox 13 Devil Rays 3
Saturday, March 24, 2007
The Red Sox get another dominating performance from Tim Wakefield and beat up on Scott Kazmir in a laugher over the Devil Rays. The Sox spread the offense around again as 5 different players had 3 hits in the game. Surprisingly, neither David Ortiz nor Manny Ramirez were one of the 3 hit players. Ortiz had a downright odd line in the box score: 4 AB, 1 R, 0 H, 2 RBI. Ortiz didn't walk in the game, so how does one score a run and knock two in without a hit or walk? The run was scored after Ortiz reached base on a 2-base error by Devil Rays right fielder Russell Branyan, while the 2 RBI were on a sac fly and a ground out with a runner on 3rd. Although Wake did allow a 2 run homer to Branyan, he keeps his ERA below 1.00 at 0.84. He only allowed 2 hits in the game, which brings his season total to just 12 hits allowed in 31 IP.

April 19, 2006: Phillies 15 Nationals 10
The Nationals score double digit runs in a game for the first time this season, and yet lose the game 15-10 in a wild one at Citizens Bank Park. The Nationals outhit the Phillies, 17-13, so you figure walks were the difference...no, the Phillies pitchers issued 9 walks compared to the Nationals' 5. The difference was both execution and the ability to clear the bases with the long ball. There were 8 home runs in this game, 5 belonging to the Phillies, 3 hit by Pat Burrell on his way to 7 RBI. The Nationals left 17 men on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the 4th and the 8th. The Nationals did score 4 in the 9th but unfortunately ended up in a 2 out situation with the pitcher due up and only one bat left on the bench. Pinch hitter Brendan Harris ended up grounding out to end the game. The hitting star for the Nats was Jose Guillen, who was 4 for 6 and hit his first homer of the season. This was a rather surprising output for Guillen, who only had 2 hits so far this season even though he had started more than half the games in right field.

WEB GEMS- Top 5th: Jimmy Rollins robbed Daryle Ward of a base hit.
Pat Burrell launched 3 homeruns and had 7 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the Washington Nationals by a score of 15 to 10 at Citizen's Bank
Park.
Burrell provided much of the offense. He delivered a solo blast in the 1st
inning, lost the ball over the fence for three runs in the 3rd inning, laced
a single bringing in two baserunners in the 4th inning and ripped a solo home
run (his 5th of the season) in the 5th inning. Philadelphia bats were hot in
the 4th inning when they had 7 runs on 4 hits. Due to a poorly pitched
ballgame, scoring in 7 different innings was still not enough for Washington
to come away with the victory.
The win went to Gavin Floyd(1-1) who allowed 3 runs in 5 innings. The losing
pitcher was Livan Hernandez(0-4). He served up 4 gopher balls in 3 innings.

April 18, 2006: Nationals 5 Phillies 1
The Nationals win consecutive games for the first time this season with a win in the series opener against the Phillies. This looked the same as Tony Armas Jr's other starts this season at first, as the game was scoreless through 5. In fact, Armas had not allowed a hit to that point. The Nationals load the bases off Cory Lidle in the 6th and the Phils pull him, but the Nats fail to score. Then with 2 out in the bottom of the inning, Jimmy Rollins gets the first Phillies hit of the game with a double and Aaron Rowand follows with a double to score Rollins. At this point I figure we're looking at another 1-0 loss for Armas, but the Nationals actually score 5 runs over the next 2 innings to walk away with the win.

Rollins doubled with two outs in the 6th inning. The teams had been locked

Geoff Geary(3-1) absorbed the loss in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings
allowing 3 hits and no walks.
