The Houston Astros are World Series Champions!
Sunday, December 02, 2007
October 28, 2005: The Astros come out victorious in a back-and-forth battle with the Twins to take game 6 by a 3-2 score and win their 2nd World Series championship in my SOM replay era. The Astros also won in 2003 in 7 games over the Red Sox. In today's game, starters Roy Oswalt and Boof Bonser were going at it in a pitcher's battle but both got high in the pitch count and were pulled before the 6th inning was out. Oswalt allowed a Twins run in the 2nd on a double followed by a single, while Bonser allowed just 1 hit through the first 5 innings. He allowed a home run to Mike Lamb in the 6th which tied it up, then allowed a single, hit a batter, and allowed another single before getting pulled. Juan Rincon would enter with the bases loaded and strike out Aubrey Huff, then get Adam Everett to ground out to end the threat and keep the score tied. In the 8th, Chris Burke would break the tie with a solo homer off Rincon to give the Astros a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the 8th, the Twins would tie it right back with a Mike Cuddyer solo shot off Brad Lidge. In the 9th with Rincon still in the game, Adam Everett would lead off with a walk and be followed by a Brad Ausmus single. Rincon would be pulled in favor of Jesse Crain, but Willy Tavares would meet Crain with a single to load the bases, and Crain would walk Craig Biggio with the bases loaded to push across the go-ahead run. Mike Lamb would then ground into the home to first double play, Lance Berkman would be walked to reload the bases, but Chris Burke would ground out to end the inning. Enter Dan Wheeler, who inherited the Astros closer job for the World Series after Lidge was so ineffective in the NLCS. Wheeler gets the first 2 outs, but then allows singles to pinch hitter Jason Kubel and Luis Castillo. Nick Punto ends the inning, disappointing the home crowd by flying out for the final out as the Astros celebrate on the field. Mike Lamb is the series MVP. He had a solo homer for one of the 3 runs in this game, and had 3 other home runs in the series while hitting .400. This is the 5th time in 6 replays that the National League has won the World Series, but the first time that the losing AL team didn't have 'Sox' as part of their team name.

The game was won by Houston with a run in the top of the 9th inning. Adam
Everett drew a walk. Brad Ausmus followed and he stroked a base-hit. Willy
Taveras then lined a single to load the bases. Craig Biggio was up next and

October 26, 2006: Astros 8 Twins 4 (Astros lead series, 3-2)
Saturday, December 01, 2007
In game 5, the Astros reverse the score of the previous game and win 8-4 before the home crowd. The Twins certainly had the perceived advantage in this one with Johan Santana on the mound, but the Astros were able to get to him for 2 runs in both the 2nd and 4th innings. The walk was the killer for Santana, as he allowed 2 in each of those innings. The Twins would manage to tie it up at 4 n the top of the 6th, but the Astros would come back to strike in the bottom of the 7th against a tiring Santana for 4 more runs. The big hits in the 7th were back to back triples - a bases clearing job by Chris Burke, followed by Luke Scott to knock in Burke and finally knock Santana from the game. Roy Oswalt will take the hill and try to clinch the series for the Astros in game 6. Boof Bonser will try to get the Twins to game 7.

October 25, 2006: Twins 8 Astros 4 (series tied, 2-2)
The World Series is all tied up at 2 games apiece after the Twins beat Andy Pettitte and the Astros by an 8-4 score. Torii Hunter was a big part of the Twins offense, going 3 for 5 with a double and 2 homers. Leadoff hitter Luis Castillo also had a 3 hit day. Twins starter Carlos Silva allowed just 5 hits and 2 runs over 7 innings, but was left in a little too long in the 8th and ended up with a 7 2/3 IP, 8 H, 4 ER line. Still, it was good enough for the win. Joe Nathan came in with the tying run on deck in the 8th and struck out pinch hitter Jason Lane to end the threat. The Astros would load the bases in the 9th, but Nathan struck out Chris Burke to end the game. Game 5 will be a rematch of game 1 starters, this time in Houston. That means Johan Santana for the Twins and Wandy Rodriguez for the Astros.

Center fielder Torii Hunter slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Minute Maid
Field as the Minnesota Twins beat the Houston Astros by the count of 8 to
4.
Hunter enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He blasted a solo shot in the 2nd
inning, hit a bases-empty home run (his 4th of the season) in the 4th inning
and doubled scoring a run in the 5th inning. Overall Minnesota out-hit
Houston 12 to 9.
Carlos Silva(1-0) allowed 4 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Silva got help from Joe Nathan who earned his 5th save. Andy
Pettitte(0-2) was the loser. He served up 3 homeruns in his 5 innings.

October 24, 2006: Astros 10 Twins 0 (Astros lead series, 2-1)
The Astros make game 3 of the World Series look easy as they hand a 10-0 shellacking to the Twins. Roger Clemens allows just 3 hits in 7 shutout innings, extending his shutout inning streak to 16. Brad Lidge pitches the last 2 innings to preserve the shutout. Offensively, the Astros are led by Craig Biggio (3 for 4, HR, 4 RBI), Luke Scott (3 for 4, 3 runs, 2 RBI, 3B, HR) and Aubrey Huff (2 for 4, 3 runs, HR). Brad Radke takes the loss, allowing 5 runs in 5 1/3 innings. The long ball was his downfall, as he allowed all 3 Astro homers. Carlos Silva will try to tie up the series in the game 4 start for the Twins, while Andy Pettitte will go for the homestanding Astros.

Left fielder Luke Scott jacked one out of the ballyard and had 2 RBI at Minute
Maid Field as the Houston Astros embarrassed the Minnesota Twins by the
lopsided score of 10 to 0.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Scott. He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 4th of the
season) in the 4th inning, tripled in the 6th inning and laced a base-knock
in the 7th inning. Houston had 14 hits for the night while Minnesota had 5.
The win was credited to Roger Clemens(3-1) who went 7 innings allowing no
runs. The losing pitcher was Brad Radke(1-2). He served up 3 homeruns in his
5 and 1/3 innings.

Thursday, November 29, 2007
Despite getting outhit, the Astros get the 7-3 win in game 2 to even the World Series at a game apiece. The Astros did it all with the long ball. Craig Biggio started the scoring in the 2nd on a 2 run homer which was immediately followed by a Brad Ausmus solo shot, Biggio got another 2 run shot in the 6th, and Mike Lamb hit a solo homer in the 7th and again in the 9th. Astros starter Roy Oswalt allowed 10 hits over 7 innings, but only allowed 2 runs and earned the win. Brad Lidge pitched a perfect 8th but struggled in the 9th, which enabled Dan Wheeler to earn the save by inducing a double play to end the game. Originally I was going to use Andy Pettitte in game 3 for the Astros, but instead I decided to push Clemens up to game 3 on normal rest which would set him up for a potential game 7 start. Clemens has been much better thus far in the playoffs. The Twins will counter with Brad Radke.

October 21, 2006: Twins 8 Astros 1 (Twins lead series, 1-0)
Wednesday, November 28, 2007
The Twins make game 1 of the World Series look easy, as they win 8-1 over the Astros behind the left arm of Johan Santana. Santana didn't pitch a no-hitter like he did last time out, but he did pitch a complete game. He scattered 6 hits over the 9 innings, striking out 8 and walking none. The lone Astro run was scored in the 1st when #2 hitter Morgan Ensberg went deep. The Twins did most of their damage with a 7 run 2nd. Astro starter Wandy Rodriguez allowed 4 singles, 2 walks and 4 runs before being pulled with 2 outs in favor of Chad Qualls. Qualls allowed 2 more singles and a walk before getting the 3rd out, allowing 4 mroe runs, 2 of which were charged to Rodriguez. Boof Bonser will take on Roy Oswalt in game 2. Both have made 3 starts this postseason, while Oswalt also made a relief appearance. Bonser is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA. Oswalt is 2-1 with a 2.74 ERA.

solid 9 innings as the Minnesota Twins topped the Houston Astros by a score
of 8 to 1 at Metrodome.
In the 2nd inning Minnesota scored 7 runs with the help of 6 hits. That was
all the runs Santana(3-1) needed. Minnesota had a total of 12 hits for the
game.
Wandy Rodriguez(0-1) took the loss. When questioned about his counterpart
after the game, Rodriguez was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious very
early on that we were going to be in for a long night. Santana brought his
'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly. He
probably only made one or two bad pitches the entire game!

October 19, 2006: Astros 1 Padres 0 (Astros win series, 4-3)
Tuesday, November 27, 2007
The Houston Astros are National League champions and will face the Minnesota Twins in the World Series after today's remarkable game 7 in the NLCS. The stage was set with craft veterans David Wells and Roger Clemens facing one another, Clemens on 3 days rest after planned game 7 starter Roy Oswalt was called into emergency relief in the wild 20 inning game 6. The game was everything one could have hoped for out of 2 guys who know how to win in the playoffs, as a 2nd inning Astros run ends up being the only one scored in a 1-0 win. Wells went 7 innings, allowing just 5 hits and the one run. Clemens was even more remarkable - a complete game shutout, allowing just 3 hits while walking 3 and striking out 7. The lone run scored thanks to 2 consecutive hits in the 2nd - a Luke Scott double followed by a Craig Biggio single. It was the only time in this game that 2 consecutive batters would reach base for either team. Scott finished a homer shy of the cycle, as he had 3 of the Astros 6 hits. Luke Scott is the series MVP - besides scoring the winning run in this game, he hit .355 for the series with 3 triples, 2 homers and 6 RBI. Clemens might seem like a good choice as well, but his game 7 heroics still can't make us overlook his game 4 implosion when he allowed 5 runs in just 1/3 of an inning. Of course, his brief stint in that game may have been a blessing to help his stamina on 3 days rest in game 7. Something I thought of during the game...Wells and Clemens were once traded for each other. After Clemens' 2 years in Toronto, he was traded to the Yankees for Wells. Also of note...Clemens got the win in the deciding game 5 of the Astros' NLDS series with the Mets, although he only went 5 innings in that one. Due to Oswalt's unexpected relief appearance and Clemens' being pushed up a day, #4 starter Wandy Rodriguez will get the start in game 1 of the World Series. Johan Santana goes for the Twins. Oswalt will start game 2 on what would be 3 days rest from his 3 inning relief appearance, then Pettitte and Clemens will handle games 3 and 4 on an extra days rest each.

October 18, 2006: Astros 9 Padres 5 (20) (series tied, 3-3)
Monday, November 26, 2007
OH MY GOD! That is really all that can be said after a game 6 in which the Astros came back to tie it in the 9th and then it took 11 more innings before either team could cross the plate again. I've included the play account so you can follow the whole progression of events. Things to note: Roy Oswalt, who pitched 3 innings of relief, was supposed to be the game 7 starter. The computer manager brought him in to pinch hit, which made sense because no one else was available and Oswalt is a 6N. It didn't make sense to me to have him actually pitch, especially since there were 2 relievers still in the pen in addition to the game 4 and 5 starters. Springer eventually entered the game, but Brad Lidge never did...which I was ok with because Lidge had sucked up the last 2 games. For the Padres, they went to Peavy who had started game 5 but kept Wells on the shelf for his game 7 start. I think now I will start Clemens in game 7 for the Astros on short rest, and I'm going to manaually manage both teams to make sure the computer doesn't make any boneheaded pitching moves.

the San Diego Padres in 20 innings by a score of 9 to 5 at Petco Park.
The score was tied at 5 after nine. Finally, Houston pulled the game out in

the crowd when he laced a one-base hit bringing in two baserunners. Despite
losing, San Diego out-hit Houston 19 to 16.
The win was credited to Russ Springer(2-0) who went 3 innings allowing no
runs. Jake Peavy(1-1) ended up with the loss in relief. Although losing the
contest, he whiffed 8 batters in 5 innings.
'I was in my hotel room the other night, working on my swing and made some

October 16, 2006: Padres 7 Astros 6 (Padres lead series, 3-2)
Sunday, November 25, 2007
Brad Lidge blows a save and allows the Padres to tie the game for the 2nd straight day, but this time the Astros lose in 12 instead of winning in 9. The Padres got 2 runs in the top of the 1st but the Astros started out hotter in this game with 4 straight hits, then after 2 outs Adam Everett came through with a 3 run homer that was the death knell for Pads starter Jake Peavy. Luke Scott made it 6-2 with a solo shot in the 3rd, then the Padres came back with runs in the top of the 4th (a Ryan Klesko pinch hit double with a runner on) and the 5th (a Mike Piazza solo HR). The 6-4 Astros lead would stand until the 9th when Lidge entered to try to save it. Lidge walked a batter between the first 2 outs, but it looked like he was going to be ok until pinch hitter Rob Bowen took him deep to left to tie the game. The Astros would get a runner to 2nd with 2 outs in both the 9th and the 11th, but it was Russell Branyan's solo homer to lead off the 12th that ended up being enough to win the game for the Padres. The series moves back to San Diego for game 6. Andy Pettitte gets the must-win assignment for the Astros against Chris Young.
