End of August Standings

Standings as of August 31, 2006

As you can see, the Sox now sit 5 games back of the Yankees for the division title and are basically freefalling out of playoff contention. It doesn't help that the Yankees have won 5 straight games. At the same time, the Sox wild card hopes are being dashed by the Twins 9 game winning streak, which has also put the Twins into a tie for the AL Central. (This is quite similar to what actually happened in 2006 - the Tigers led the Central most of the year, but the Twins caught them and ended up winning the division. Of course, the wild card Tigers would represent the AL in the World Series)

In the NL, you can plainly see the Phillies collapse as evidenced by their 9 game losing streak. The Phils now sit 3.5 games back of the Mets in the division, but have a healthy lead in the wild card race. Barring a complete collapse, the Phils should make the playoffs for the first time in the history of my SOM computer replays. The Nationals have been playing well lately and sit just 3 games under .500, but a .500 record and 3rd place are more realistic goals for that team.

August 31, 2006: Nationals 6 Phillies 5

The Nats complete a series sweep of the Phillies and also send them to their 9th straight loss. In this one, the score was tied at 3-3 from the 4th through to the 8th, when Ryan Zimmerman and Marlon Anderson hit back-to-back homers off Geoff Geary. The Nats would need all of the 3 run lead provided by those two blasts, as Pat Burrell hits a 2 run shot off Chad Cordero in the Phillies 9th but they can't put another one on the board and end up losing by a run.

The Washington Nationals edged the reeling Philadelphia Phillies at RFK
STADIUM by the score of 6 to 5.

Washington came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 8th inning with
3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Nick Johnson
started the attack as he doubled. Ryan Zimmerman stepped into the batter's
box and he smashed a two-run homer (his 18th of the season). Marlon Anderson
then smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 6th of the season). Philadelphia
had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

The victory went to Saul Rivera(3-6) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. Chad
Cordero earned his 30th save. Geoff Geary(11-6) was the loser in relief.

August 30, 2006: Nationals 9 Phillies 4

An ugly win for the Nationals in a game that was poorly played on both sides. Both teams issued 7 walks and the Phillies actually outhit the Nats, but the Nats were able to put it all together in the 5th for a 5-run inning which coincidentally ends up being the difference in the game. The big hit was provided by Felipe Lopez, who knocked in 2 in the inning with a triple.

August 30, 2006: Red Sox 3 A's 1

The Red Sox close out their west coast swing on a winning note with a 3-1 win over the A's. Overall, the Sox were 5-4 on the swing through LA, Seattle, and Oakland.

This one was almost a complete game for both sides, but Curt Schilling had allowed runners to reach 1st and 3rd in the 9th with Frank Thomas due up. That seemed like a good time for Papelbon, who struck out Thomas and Eric Chavez to end the game. I'm not sure why the A's manager left Zito in to throw 153 pitches...

At McAfee Coliseum, the Oakland faithful were treated to an intriguing
pitcher's duel. Curt Schilling(14-11) finally bested his Oakland
counterpart, Barry Zito(14-7), by the score of 3 to 1.

Schilling had a strong outing. He allowed just 7 hits and no walks in 8 and
1/3 innings. Oakland had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up
short.

Jonathan Papelbon recorded the save, his 31st. Zito was the losing pitcher.
Ken Macha was clearly disappointed after the game. 'It was a manager's

Tony Armas Jr, Saul Rivera, and Chris Schroder combine to shut out the Phillies by a 6-0 score. The Phillies have been in a free fall lately, now 2.5 games back of the Mets in the division after holding the division lead since the beginning of May. Fortunately, they have inherited the double digit lead that the Mets had in the wild card race and should still be playoff bound barring a complete collapse.

August 29, 2006: Red Sox 6 A's 2

The Red Sox offense finally awakens on the west coast, beating the A's by a 6-2 score. The scoring started in the 3rd when Dustin Pedroia led off the inning with a solo homer, and then the Sox loaded the bases and scored another run on an Eric Hinske sac fly. The A's would get one back in the 3rd and tie it in the 6th, but the Sox broke through big in the top of the 7th, batting around and scoring 4 runs. The big hit was a 2 run triple by Eric Hinske. Josh Beckett gets his 15th win, which seems shocking considering how poorly he started the season. 20 wins is likely out of reach though, as Beckett would have to win all 5 of his remaining starts.

The Red Sox are now 3-3 on their west coast swing after a 4-0 loss to the Mariners in which the offense was practically non-existent. August 26, 2006: Mariners 5 Red Sox 4 (11)

The Sox go down in 11 as the Mariners push the winning run across on a potential double play where the throw didn't get to first in time. Julian Tavarez issued a leadoff walk to TJ Bohn, who was advanced to 2nd on an Ichiro bunt. Jose Lopez singled to move Bohn to 3rd. (Lopez had hit a 2 run homer off David Wells ealier in the game.) Adrian Beltre then grounded back to Tavarez, who got the throw to 2nd to get Lopez for the 2nd out, but the throw to 1st doesn't get there in time and Bohn crosses the plate with the winning run.

The Yankees also lost so the Red Sox stay 2.5 games back, but the Twins won their 5th straight which puts the Sox 1.5 back in the wild card race.

Adam Laroche jacked one out of the ballyard and had 5 RBI as the Atlanta
Braves clobbered the outmatched Washington Nationals, 15 to 5.

The Atlanta fans enjoyed the offense provided by Laroche. He doubled plating
two runs in the 1st inning, doubled which was good for two runs in the 4th
inning and delivered a solo blast (his 25th of the season) in the 8th inning.
Atlanta provided plenty of action in the 1st inning with 4 runs on 5 hits
and the 6th inning with 4 runs on 4 hits. Atlanta managed 20 in their
victory.

Smoltz(6-9) finished the game allowing 5 runs in the victory. The losing
pitcher was Pedro Astacio(3-5). By giving up 8 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings his
ERA increased from 5.20 to 6.00.

August 25, 2006: Nationals 7 Braves 5

Another fantastic comeback by the Washington Nationals! Don't look now, but they're creeping up on .500. Of course, they are still 18.5 games behind the wild card leading Mets, but are just 1 1/2 back of the Braves with 2 more games to go in this series.

I returned Alfonso Soriano to the leadoff spot today, as he had been slumping in the 3 hole and Felipe Lopez had basically stopped hitting in the leadoff spot. Soriano apparently liked the move, as he went 3 for 4 with 2 homers, 3 runs scored, and 4 RBI. In the 9th with the Nats down by 2, Alex Escobar continued his hot hitting by leading off with a double. At this point the Braves went to the bullpen and closer Bob Wickman, but Brian Schneider greeted him with a single up the middle to send Escobar to 3rd. The pitcher's spot was up next so I pinch hit with Daryle Ward, who struck out but not before Wickman unleashed a wild pitch to advance Schneider and score Escobar. Soriano was up next and he put one into the left field seats to take a 6-5 lead, followed by a Felipe Lopez single and eventually a Nick Johnson double to score the 7th Nats run. Chad Cordero was up quickly in the Nats bullpen once the score went in favor of the good guys, and he entered for a 1-2-3 9th and his 28th save.
