August 14, 2006: Nationals 4 Braves 2

There was a time when the Nats/Expos and Braves would be a marquee matchup between the top two teams in the NL East. Not this year, as the Braves were 21 games back at the start of the day while the Nats were 25.5 back of the division-leading Phillies. Still, I take joy in beating the Braves, especially when they do it with power, pitching, and baserunning like today.

Ramon Ortiz contributes 8 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs while striking out 9. The 8 innings were especially important after a couple 11 inning losses in which the Nats bullpen was overworked. For power, the Nats got a solo homer from Austin Kearns to account for one of their 4 runs. The 4th and final run scored on a ground out, but only because Alfonso Soriano was already on 3rd after executing a double steal with Nick Johnson.
