Ramon Ortiz went 8 strong innings and Nick Johnson had 5 hits and 4 RBI as the
Washington Nationals defeated the Tampa Bay Devil Rays by a score of 8 to 1
at RFK STADIUM.
Johnson enjoyed a big day at the plate. He lined a single in the 1st inning,
ripped a base-knock which plated a run in the 3rd inning, banged out a
one-base hit in the 5th inning, smashed a two-run homer (his 13th of the
season) in the 6th inning and doubled which scored a run in the 8th inning.
Washington simply wore out the Tampa Bay pitching staff, scoring in 6
different innings.
The win was credited to Ortiz(7-8) who went 8 innings allowing 1 run. Jae
Seo(4-4) was the loser. He allowed 9 hits and no walks in 4 innings.

July 2, 2006: Red Sox 8 Marlins 6
The Red Sox offense bailed out the bullpen in this one, as a 3-3 tie turned into a 5-3 Marlins lead and then into a 8-5 Red Sox lead. Marlins closer Joe Borowski shows how he earned his 0-6 record by allowing the Sox to load the bases in the 9th and then walking in the go-ahead run. Mark Loretta adds a 2-run single to make it a 3 run lead. Julian Tavarez comes in for the 9th because both Papelbon and Timlin were fatigued, but he allows just one run on the way to his 3rd save of the season.

In a thriller the Boston Red Sox staged a dramatic comeback then held on to
win over the Florida Marlins by a score of 8 to 6 at Dolphins
Stadium.
Boston won the game with a rally in the top of the 9th inning when they scored
5 runs on 5 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Mark Loretta who
quieted the home crowd when he stroked a base-hit scoring two baserunners.
Boston finished with 10 hits in the victory.
Rudy Seanez(2-1) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 2/3 of an inning.
Seanez got relief help from Julian Tavarez who gained credit for his 3rd
save. Joe Borowski(0-6) absorbed the loss in relief.
After the game, it took a long while before Joe Girardi emerged from his
office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He
concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood this
afternoon, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a
lot more light-hearted over in the Boston locker room.'

July 1, 2006: Nationals 4 Devil Rays 3
The Nationals break a 5 game losing streak with a one-run victory in interleague play. Even though Livan Hernandez has been downright terrible at times, he gets his 8th victory of the year with a 6 inning 3 run performance. Hernandez did try to give it away in the 5th, allowing 4 singles and issuing one walk but manages to limit the damage to 2 runs. Gary Majewski contributes 1 2/3 IP and a hold, which is refreshing considering he had allowed 9 runs in his last 2 outings.

June 30, 2006: Devil Rays 11 Nationals 2
Sunday, June 24, 2007
This game was going pretty well until the 7th, when the Devil Rays scored 5 runs before the Nats were able to record an out. They end up getting 6 in the 7th and 3 more in the 8th to run away with the 11-2 win. Carl Crawford was definitely the player of the game, going 4 for 5 with 4 runs scored, 3 RBI, 2 stolen bases, and only a homer short of the cycle.

June 30, 2006: Red Sox 3 Marlins 2
Wednesday, June 20, 2007
The Red Sox manage to snatch a victory against the Marlins even though they get outhit 14-5. Most of that was the work of Sox starter Jason Johnson, who defines "scatter" by scattering 11 hits over 6 innings in which he only allowed one run while the Red Sox were busy scoring 3. Mike Timlin allows another run to cross the plate in the 8th, but Jonathan Papelbon enters the game with 2 out and runners on base for the 4 out save.

The Red Sox got only 3 hits in this one, but still almost pulled off a 9th inning comeback. Unfortunately, pinch hitter Trot Nixon could only manage a popup with the bases loaded. Curt Schilling pitched well enough to win, and Papelbon worked the 9th only because he hadn't pitched in 6 days. and no, I can't for the life of me figure out why the Mets manager pulled Glavine after 5.

The Toronto Blue Jays cruised to a 11 to 6 victory over the Washington
Nationals at Rogers Centre.
Toronto scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 8th inning as they
scored 5 runs on 4 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Frank
Catalanotto who excited the crowd when he rifled a three-run blast (his 3rd
of the season). This was the kind of game that many fans love as the lead
changed hands 5 times.
Jason Frasor(4-0) went 3 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Gary
Majewski(1-3) ended up with the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning
and surrendered 4 hits and 1 walk.

The Red Sox, behind Josh Beckett, make easy work of old friend Pedro Martinez in a 6-1 win over the Mets. Mike Lowell was the big hero with a solo homer in the 2nd and a 2 RBI double in the 3rd. Manny added a 2 run shot in the 5th to chase Pedro from the game, while Beckett allowed just one unearned run over 7. Beckett is now over .500 on the season, which is especially amazing considering his early season woes.

Wakefield allows just 2 hits through 7 innings, both in the first inning - a single followed by a Ryan Howard home run. Kevin Youkilis gets 2 for the Sox with a solo homer in the 4th and an RBI single in the 6th, but then commits a 2 base error in the 7th which leads to the eventual winning run for the Phillies. The Phils tack on one more in the 8th on a Jimmy Rollins homer, and Tom Gordon puts the top of the Sox order down without a fight for his 20th save. The Sox continue interleague play next by welcoming the New York Mets and old friend Pedro Martinez to Fenway Park. Pedro will face off against Josh Beckett in the middle game of the series. |
