May 22, 2006: Yankees 8 Red Sox 7

The Yankees took the early lead in this one off an ineffective Curt Schilling, but the Sox crawled back to within 1 run before the bullpen gave it away in the 8th. Then, just to toy with me, the Sox score 4 in the bottom of the ninth but Alex Cora grounds out to end the game with the tying run on 2nd.

WEB GEMS- Top 7th: Trot Nixon robbed Johnny Damon of a Homerun!

Shortstop Derek Jeter blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI as the New York (AL)
Yankees outscored the Boston Red Sox 8 to 7.

New York (AL) took the lead for good in the top of the 3rd inning with 2 runs
using 2 hits. Melky Cabrera kicked off the action when he doubled. After an
out was recorded, Jeter stepped up to the plate and he smashed a two-run
homer (his 8th of the season). Boston threatened in the 9th but their rally
came up short.

Chien-Ming Wang(2-4) allowed 2 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Curt Schilling(4-4) was given the loss. The New York (AL)
ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 27-16. With this loss,
Boston has a 6-4 record of late, 22-20 overall.

April 30, 2006: Cardinals 7 Nationals 6

The Nationals let a 5 run lead get away in this one and end up losing in embarassing fashion in the 9th. John Rodriguez led off the 9th for the Cards with a single off Gary Majewski. Majewski then committed not one but two wild pitches, which put Rodriguez on third. Albert Pujols grounds to shortstop, the Cards send the runner, and he is safe at home for the win.

The blame does not solely fall on Majewski, since Jon Rauch and Mike Stanton combined to allow 3 runs in the 7th. Starter Zach Day allowed 3 runs through 6 but was in line for the win thanks to the 6 runs of offensive support. This was Day's return to the Nationals as he was signed off waivers from the Rockies, who the Nationals had traded him to at the deadline in '05 in a package for Preston Wilson, who left for free agency at the end of the season.

In a dramatic ending at Busch Stadium the St. Louis Cardinals won in their
last at-bat beating the Washington Nationals by the count of 7 to 6.

The game was won by St. Louis with a run in the 9th inning. John Rodriguez
laced a base-knock. Gary Majewski then unleashed a wild pitch. Majewski
then had one get away for a wild pitch. Albert Pujols stepped in and he
would hit into a fielders choice making St. Louis the victor and beginning a
joyous home town celebration. St. Louis had 11 hits for the game and
Washington had 6.

The win went to Josh Hancock(1-1) who allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings.
The loss was charged to Majewski(0-1) in relief. He was unable to retire a
batter giving up 1 hit and no walks.

April 30, 2006: Devil Rays 9 Red Sox 2

What should have been a pitcher's duel between two teams aces turns into a lopsided loss for the Red Sox. Scott Kazmir gives up just 2 hits in the game, both to Manny Ramirez - a first inning single and a ninth inning double. In the first, the Sox get 2 runs thanks to Kazmir's control problems, as he issued bases loaded walks to Jason Varitek and Mike Lowell. In the 9th, Kazmir opened the inning by walking David Ortiz, followed by the Manny double...but then struck out the side to finish off the complete game win.

The Red Sox now go home to welcome the New York Yankees, a game that will feature the return of traitor Johnny Damon.

Check this one out!

The Cubs scored 23 runs in a shellacking of the Brewers, but what's most imprssive is that Jacque Jones had 2 grand slams and 11 RBI.

There's also some really ugly pitching lines for the Brewers pitchers.

Jacque Jones smacked 2 homeruns and Glendon Rusch struck out 13 batters as the
Milwaukee Brewers were badly beaten by the Chicago (NL) Cubs, 23 to 8.

Jones was spectacular at the plate. He emptied the bases with a Grand Slam
homerun in the 1st inning, singled scoring a run in the 2nd inning, slapped a
one-base hit bringing in two baserunners in the 3rd inning and cleared the
bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 5th of the season) in the 5th inning.
Chicago (NL) lit up the scoreboard in the 3rd inning which saw them plate 8
runs on 8 hits and the 5th inning when they had 7 runs on 6 hits. Chicago
(NL) finished with 27 hits while Milwaukee ended up with 13.

Rusch(1-4) got the win allowing 4 runs in 8 innings. Doug Davis(1-3) took the
loss. He surrendered 3 hits and 2 walks in 1/3 of an inning.

'Everything felt great' Rusch said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I could
throw it by everybody today.'

April 29, 2006: Devil Rays 5 Red Sox 4

This one was basically decided in the first inning. The Red Sox came out slugging, with homers by Ortiz and Ramirez, but the Devil Rays came right back with 4 in the bottom of the inning and held on for the win.

The Red Sox almost pulled off the comeback in the 9th. With 2 out and Alex Gonzalez due up, I pinch hit with Mark Loretta who was getting a day off. Loretta doubled, and then Dan Miceli walked the next 2 batters to load the bases for Big Papi. Unfortunately, Ortiz could only manage a ground ball to the 2nd baseman, which was easily tossed to the first baseman to end the game.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays tallied 4 runs in the 1st inning and edged the Boston
Red Sox at Tropicana Field by the score of 5 to 4.

Boston fell behind quickly as the Tampa Bay offense came through in the first
inning when they tallied 4 runs on 4 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided
by Damon Hollins who excited the crowd when he cleared the fences for a
two-run home run (his 5th of the season). Boston had a chance in the 9th but
they came up short.

The victory went to Doug Waechter(1-2) who went 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing 4
runs. Dan Miceli was credited with his 5th save. Lenny Dinardo(1-1) was
given the loss.

'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' Terry Francona said. 'We did
what we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?'

April 28, 2006: Red Sox 8 Devil Rays 7

Julian Tavarez and Mike Timlin tried to give this one away in the 8th, but the Red Sox strike back with 2 in the 9th off Dan Miceli and go on to win behind Jonathan Papelbon's 4th save of the year.

A perfect example here of why you shouldn't judge someone by their won-lost record, since Mike Timlin gets the win even though he allowed the 2 run home run to Nick Green that almost cost the Sox the game.

WEB GEMS- Top 5th: Ty Wigginton robbed Manny Ramirez of a base hit.

Third baseman Mike Lowell had 4 hits and 4 RBI at Tropicana Field as the
Boston Red Sox came back dramatically to top the Tampa Bay Devil Rays by the
score of 8 to 7.

Boston scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning with 2 runs using 2 hits.
Lowell kicked off the action when he lined a base-hit. Trot Nixon stepped
into the batter's box and he drew a walk. After an out was recorded, Alex
Gonzalez stepped in and he drew a walk to load the bases. Kevin Youkilis
followed and he lined a one-base hit plating two runs. A wild affair, this
game saw the lead change 5 times.

Mike Timlin(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 2/3 of an inning.
Jonathan Papelbon was credited with his 4th save. Dan Miceli(0-2) was
charged with the loss in relief.

'The only way this one could have been better', said Timlin, 'was if we had
played it at home.'
