| This one was basically decided in the first inning. The Red Sox came out slugging, with homers by Ortiz and Ramirez, but the Devil Rays came right back with 4 in the bottom of the inning and held on for the win. The Red Sox almost pulled off the comeback in the 9th. With 2 out and Alex Gonzalez due up, I pinch hit with Mark Loretta who was getting a day off. Loretta doubled, and then Dan Miceli walked the next 2 batters to load the bases for Big Papi. Unfortunately, Ortiz could only manage a ground ball to the 2nd baseman, which was easily tossed to the first baseman to end the game. |

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays tallied 4 runs in the 1st inning and edged the Boston
Red Sox at Tropicana Field by the score of 5 to 4.
Boston fell behind quickly as the Tampa Bay offense came through in the first
inning when they tallied 4 runs on 4 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided
by Damon Hollins who excited the crowd when he cleared the fences for a
two-run home run (his 5th of the season). Boston had a chance in the 9th but
they came up short.
The victory went to Doug Waechter(1-2) who went 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing 4
runs. Dan Miceli was credited with his 5th save. Lenny Dinardo(1-1) was
given the loss.
'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' Terry Francona said. 'We did
what we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?'
