October 12, 2006: Padres 8 Astros 4 (Padres lead series, 2-0)

The Padres are up 2 games to none in the NLCS after a 5-run 3rd inning powers them to the 8-4 win over the Astros. Craig Biggio led off the game with a homer for the Astros, but the Padres got one back in the 1st and then put 5 on the board in the 3rd. The Padres scored the 5 runs on just 2 hits in the inning, which helps explain why they only had 5 hits for the game but scored 8 runs. After 2 were out in the inning, here's how it went: walk, double (1 run scores), walk, balk, intentional walk, walk (2nd run scores), double (3 runs score). Astros starter Andy Pettitte was pulled at this point and Chad Qualls was able to get the 3rd out but would give up 2 more in the 4th on a Mike Cameron homer. Cameron also had the first double in the 3rd and a triple in the 1st, which means he was only a single short of the cycle in the 4th inning...but he would only get one more AB in the game and would strike out. In fact, Cameron's homer would be the last hit of the game for the Padres.

The Astros wasted a 4 for 4 day by #2 hitter Mike Lamb, largely because #3 hitter Lance Berkman went 0 for 5.

Houston will hope that bringing the series to Houston will change their luck, or that starter Roy Oswalt will. Oswalt faces the Fat Man, David Wells.

Center fielder Mike Cameron slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI at Petco Park as
the San Diego Padres beat the Houston Astros 8 to 4.

The San Diego fans enjoyed the offense provided by Cameron. He tripled in the
1st inning, doubled knocking in a run in the 3rd inning and cleared the
fences for a two-run home run (his 2nd of the season) in the 4th inning.
Despite losing, Houston out-hit San Diego 8 to 5.

Chris Young(2-0) got the win allowing 4 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. Alan Embree
earned his 1st save. Andy Pettitte(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He was
knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.
