October 8, 2006: Twins 3 Yankees 1 (Twins win series, 3-2)

The Twins are ALCS-bound after beating the Yankees by a 3-1 score in the deciding game of their ALDS series. The Twins did not need much offense thanks to 6 strong innings from Johan Santana, a far cry from his game 1 performance. The Twins scored a single run in the 2nd and tacked on 2 more in the 3rd on 4 straight singles. It would be all they needed, as the only Yankee to get past 2nd base in the entire game was A-Rod, who walked with 2 outs in the 6th and was knocked in on a Gary Sheffield single.

The matchup of closers could very well have made the difference in this one. Joe Nathan pitched in 2 games, going 2 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out 5, and had 2 saves. Mariano Rivera also pitched in 2 games, but only pitched 2/3 of an inning in a game 1 save and blew it up for 3 runs in a game 2 blown save and loss.

Another interesting tidbit: The Twins did not hit a home run in their series win. The Yankees hit 6 in the series.

The series MVP is Mike Cuddyer, who hit .368 in the series and had clutch hits in the game 4 and 5 wins for the Twins.
