October 8, 2006: Padres 9 Phillies 3 (Padres win series, 3-1)
Friday, November 16, 2007
| The Phillies are the first casualty of my 2006 playoffs, losing game 4 of their NLDS series against the Padres, 9-3. The Phillies had a shot at this one and led 3-2 after scoring 2 runs on 4 hits in the 7th, but their bullpen imploded, allowing 7 runs in the 8th and 9th. Tom Gordon was the first to blow it up, allowing a single, walk and a 3 run homer in just 1/3 of an inning. Geoff Geary came in and got the final 2 outs in the 8th, but he allowed 3 hits and 3 runs before being pulled with one out in the 9th. Ryan Madson would finally put the nail in the coffin, allowing a walk and a 2-RBI single before getting the last 2 outs of the inning. The Phillies would have Howard, Burrell and Dellucci go down in order in the bottom of the 9th. Gordon was a huge disappointment in this series and is definitely the biggest goat for the Phils. He posted a 22.50 ERA in his appearances in games 1 and 4. He entered both games with a lead, blew the save, and ended up getting hung with the loss. Ryan Howard was another disappointment, hitting .125 for the series with just one RBI (on a solo homer). The series MVP is Adrian Gonzalez of the Padres. He hit .417 for the series with 7 RBI, 3 of which came on the 8th inning home run in this game which put the Padres ahead for good. The Padres will await the winner of the Mets-Astros series. Regardless of the opponent, the Padres will have home field advantage. |

First baseman Adrian Gonzalez hit one over the fence and had 5 RBI as the San
Diego Padres defeated the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 9 to 3 at
Citizen's Bank Park.
The Philadelphia fans didn't appreciate the big day Gonzalez had. He belted a
three-run homer (his 1st of the season) in the 8th inning and smacked a
single bringing in two baserunners in the 9th inning. San Diego had a total
of 10 hits for the game.
Chan Ho Park(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning. Park
got help from Trevor Hoffman who was credited with his 1st save. Tom
Gordon(0-2) was charged with the loss in relief. He gave up 3 runs and 2
hits in 1/3 of an inning.
