September 8, 2006: Ree Sox 3 Royals 2

The Red Sox send the Royals to their 13th straight loss. This one shouldn't have ended up as close as it was, but the Red Sox wasted some scoring opportunities. Even though Mark Loretta was 2 for 2 and had a solo homer in the 1st, he was thrown out on the basepaths to end both the 3rd and 5th innings. Manny Ramirez also wasted an opportunity in the 7th when he grounded into a double play to end the inning. Still, spot starter Kevin Jarvis contributes 6 shutout innings and the Sox bullpen holds on for the 3-2 win.

Unfortunately, the Sox division competitors are as good as the Royals are bad. The Yankees won their 11th straight, while the Blue Jays won their 10th straight. The Sox and Blue Jays are still tied for 2nd in both the division and the wild card, and gained a game on the wild-card leading Twins. That deficit now sits at 3.5 games.

The Boston Red Sox edged the struggling Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park by
the score of 3 to 2.

Boston wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning with 2 runs on 3
hits. After an out was recorded, Mark Loretta got things rolling when he
smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 3rd of the season). David Ortiz was
next and he slapped a single. Manny Ramirez then doubled. Mike Lowell
followed and he would ground out scoring the final run of the inning. Kansas
City had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Kevin Jarvis(2-3) went 6 innings allowing no runs for the win. Jonathan
Papelbon earned his 34th save. Odalis Perez(3-10) was the loser. He pitched
5 and 1/3 innings and surrendered 9 hits and 1 walk.
