September 6, 2006: Red Sox 5 White Sox 2
Monday, October 08, 2007
| This one was sort of a pitcher's duel, but a pitcher's duel between pitchers with no control. Through 6, Jose Contreras and Kyle Snyder had allowed just 4 hits combined between them but had issued 7 walks. It hadn't hurt them much though since each starter had allowed just one run. The Red Sox had scored in the third without the benefit of a hit when Alex Cora got to first on a HBP, advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch, to 3rd on a ground out, and scored on a Mark Loretta sac fly. Loretta had the Sox' lone hit at that point, a 1st inning single. The White Sox had scored on a Jermaine Dye solo homer that led off the 6th. In the 7th, it all fell apart for the White Sox. Trot Nixon led off the inning with the Red Sox 2nd hit of the game, followed by a Mike Lowell strikeout and a Jason Varitek walk. The White Sox pulled Contreras at this point, a curious call since he was still under 100 pitches and had allowed just 2 hits and 3 walks. Reliever Charlie Haeger shows what a dumb move this was, walking Eric Hinske to load the bases and then allowing a single to Cora to push the go-ahead run across. Haeger wasn't done, though - he walked Coco Crisp and Mark Loretta which led to 2 more runs, and was finally pulled in favor of Dustin Hermanson. Big Papi hit a sac fly to score Cora with the Sox 5th run. The lead held up, although Mike Timlin had to enter in the 9th after Lenny Dinardo put runners on 2nd and 3rd with just one out. That earns Timlin his first save of the season. Unfortunately for the Red Sox, the sweep of the White Sox series does little for them in the standings. Their wild card deficit stays at 4 games since the Twins were sweeping the Devil Rays at the same time. Their division deficit stays at 8 games since the Yankees are on a 10 game winning streak. There may be some good news though: the Yankees recent opponent, the Royals, are on a 12 game losing streak and come to Fenway Park next. |
