| The Nationals extend their winning streak to 7 games and sweep the series from the DBacks in the process with a 5-4 win. The Nats also move to .500 for the first time since May 21st, when they were just 22-22. They also now have sole possession of 3rd place for the first time since May 25th, and their 17.5 game deficit in the division is the smallest since June 13th. Of course, they still sit 14 games back in the wild card race with just 26 games left in the season, so they are playing for pride at this point. The winning edge for the Nats in this game were the 6 walks the DBacks issued, as well as taking advantage of errors and utilizing their speed. Alfonso Soriano had 3 steals in the game, yet did not even have a hit! Here's how the Nats big 4 run 5th inning went: Tony Armas was up first and struck out. Next was Soriano, who reached on a 2 base error by DBacks RF Carlos Quentin. Soriano stole third, then I attempted the squeeze with Felipe Lopez at the plate because Soriano would be the tying run in what was a 2-1 ballgame at the time. Lopez misses the pitch, and Soriano attempts to steal home on a 1-6 chance. The split comes up a 1 and Soriano is safe with the tying run! Lopez then hits the ball to Quentin, who commits another 2 base error. Jose Vidro walks, Nick Johnson grounds out, and the DBacks intentionally walk Ryan Zimmerman to get the force at any base with Austin Kearns up. Unfortunately for the DBacks, Kearns clears the bases with a triple before Brian Schneider lines out to end the inning. All 4 runs would be unearned, which helps Arizona starter Brandon Webb's ERA but does not keep him from being on the hook for the loss. The DBacks would get a run in both the 7th and the 8th, but Chad Cordero shuts them down in the 9th for his 31st save. |
