September 6, 2006: Nationals 4 Cardinals 0

This one was a collaborative effort, with 4 Nationals pitchers combining for the 4-hit shutout. One single decision seemed to seal this one for the Nats. In the bottom of the 5th, the Nats had 2 runners on with pitcher Mike O'Connor due up. O'Connor was pitching well, having allowed just 3 hits through 5 innings, but was making his first start in a month and a half after a DL stint and was already up to 80 pitches. Meanwhile, the Nats had a 1-0 lead thanks to Alfonso Soriano's leadoff homer, but had not had a hit since. So I figure runs may be at a premium and pinch hit with George Lombard. Lombard strokes one, hitting his first homer of the year and giving the Nats a 4-0 lead. Beltran Perez, Chris Booker, and Frankie Rodriguez would pick up the last 4 innings for O'Connor to give him the win and give the Nats the team shutout.

At RFK STADIUM, the Washington fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel. Mike
O'Connor(7-4) finally bested his St. Louis opposite, Chris Carpenter(13-8),
by the score of 4 to 0.

Washington drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning
scoring one runner. The early run support proved sufficient for O'Connor and
Washington. That was all the run support O'Connor required. Washington
ended up with 9 hits for the game while St. Louis had 4.

Carpenter was hit with the loss. He allowed 4 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings.
