July 26, 2006: A's 12 Red Sox 5

This game started as a pitchers' duel for the first 5 innings, then turned into what was going to be an embarrassing loss for the Red Sox, then ended up as just a mostly embarrassing loss for the Red Sox.

Through the first 4 innings, Dan Haren was holding the Red Sox hitless while the A's had gotten just 2 hits (but 4 walks) off Kyle Snyder. The Red Sox finally got through with a Doug Mirabelli double in the 5th, but failed to score, and the A's managed to load the bases in the bottom of the 5th and score on a sac fly. In the 6th, it all fell apart. Eric Chavez homered to lead off the inning, which forced Snyder's exit now that he was over 100 pitches. Craig Hansen entered in relief and walked the first batter but then induced a double play to erase the runner. He then allowed a single, a double, and a walk to load the bases. I go back to the bullpen for Rudy Seanez, who immediately allows a grand slam to Frank Thomas which makes the score 6-0 A's. As if that wasn't enough, Seanez proceeds to give up a single, a walk, and a triple (to Chavez) to make it 8-0. I go back to the bullpen for Jermaine Van Buren, who thankfully strikes out Bubba Crosby to end the inning.

The A's would get to Van Buren in the 7th, when he allowed 2 walks, an RBI single, and a 3 run homer to Milton Bradley to make the score 12-0 A's. Haren would cruise until the 9th, when his pitch count was high enough that I would have pulled him. The A's manager sticks with him though and after a leadoff K of David Ortiz, he allows a home run to Manny and then successive singles to Kapler and Lowell. The A's finally go to the bullpen and lefty Randy Keisler, so I pinch hit with right handed monster Wily Mo Pena. Pena gets hit by a pitch, but Dougie responds with a grand slam home run! That was the end of the rally though, as Alex Cora grounds out and Coco Crisp strikes out to end the game.

Side tangent: for the last 2 years, any time Doug Mirabelli hits a home run (and even sometimes when he doesn't) I exclaim "Dougie's going deep tonight!". This is why:

Dan Haren racked up an impressive total of 10 strikeouts at McAfee Coliseum as
the Oakland Athletics beat the Boston Red Sox 12 to 5.

Haren(12-5) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't allow much,
just 5 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings. Oakland ended up with 12 hits
for the game while Boston had 6.

Kyle Snyder(1-2) was tagged with the loss. Terry Francona was upset after the
game. 'I don't like to complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?',
he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's
printed in the rule book.'
