July 22, 2006: Red Sox 6 Mariners 5 (12)
Saturday, July 21, 2007
| The Red Sox and Mariners play their 2nd straight extra innings game, with the Sox prevailing this time by a 6-5 score in 12 innings. Kason Gabbard gave the Red Sox a solid 5 innings in his major league debut and was in line for the win until Mike Timlin allowed a solo shot to Adrian Beltre in the 8th. That homer tied the game at 5, which would stick until the 11th inning when the Red Sox would score 2 thanks to 2 separate errors by Mariners shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt. First, David Ortiz would reach 1st on an error to lead off the inning, and pinch runner kevin Youkilis would come around to score on a single by Gabe Kapler. Then Kapler would score on another Betancourt error on a Doug Mirabelli ground out. With the 2 run lead, I go to the closer, Papelbon. Unfortunately, he issues a one out walk and then allows a 2 run home run to old friend Crazy Carl Everett to tie the game. (This was Everett's 2nd straight game with a 2 run homer.) Fortunately, the Sox would score again in the top of the 12th when Coco Crisp led off with a single, stole 2nd, advanced to 3rd on a ground out and scored on a Youkilis sac fly. Papelbon would allow a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning, but then get the 3 outs needed including 2 strikeouts to end the game. After enterining the game as a pinch runner and then hitting a sac fly in his only plate appearance, Kevin Youkilis gets the unusual line score with a run scored, an RBI, but no AB or hit. |
