| The Nationals win one in exciting fashion with a walk-off...sacrifice fly? Well, it's exciting any time you can rally to win in your last at bats. The Nats led or were tied for most of this game, but the Cubs went ahead by a run in the top of the 7th. That score stood going into the bottom of the 9th, with the Nats up against the Cubs closer, Ryan Dempster. Dempster started the inning by issuing a walk to Daryle Ward. Alfonso Soriano was up next and singled, sending Ward to 2nd. Now Ward is a poor base runner and would be the tying run, so I pinch run with Melvin Dorta. It pays off, as Felipe Lopez singles and Dorta is able to score from 2nd. Lopez then steals 2nd with Soriano already on 3rd, his 3rd steal of the game. Ryan Zimmerman strikes out but pinch hitter Brian Schneider is then intentionally walked to load the bases. Austin Kearns comes up with the bases loaded, and he hits a fly ball to right field, deep enough to score Soriano for the Nats win! |

Chicago (NL) Cubs by a score of 7 to 6 at RFK STADIUM.
Washington came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning with
2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Daryle Ward led off and started the attack as
he drew a walk. Alfonso Soriano stepped up next and he laced a base-hit.
Felipe Lopez then delivered a single resulting in a run. Lopez then stole
second base. Ryan Zimmerman struck out, unable to help the rally. Brian
Schneider did his part to keep things going and was walked intentionally to
load the bases. Austin Kearns came next and he hit a deep fly making
Washington victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. A wild
affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times.
Jon Rauch(2-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Ryan
Dempster(2-6) was hit with the loss in relief. Frank Robinson was in great
spirits in his post-game interview. Yet, when asked about his feelings after
the thrilling comeback victory, he volunteered, 'I'll tell you this much - I
know how my counterpart, Dusty Baker, feels right now - and it's not very
good. It's terrible when you come up on the short end of one of these!'
