July 23, 2006: Red Sox 9 Mariners 1

The Red Sox roll over the Mariners in the rubber game of their series. Jon Lester pitches 7 strong innings in this one, not showing any of the wildness that has plagued his young career thus far. Manny was the big offensive star, going 3 for 5 with 2 homers and 3 RBI.

The Sox win combined with the Yankees loss to Toronto means that the Red Sox move into 1st place in the division for the first time this season. The Yankees had held 1st ever since overtaking the Blue Jays in late April. The Red Sox passed the Blue Jays for 2nd in late May and had been as close as 1.5 games out in early June but were 6 games out in early July, just 3 weeks ago. Although the Sox have had a fantastic July, I'm not sure how long they can hold on with a current rotation of Schilling/Beckett/Lester/Snyder/???
