July 18, 2006: Red Sox 13 Royals 9

The Red Sox overcome a poor start from Jon Lester to take the 13-9 victory, thanks in part to what may be the worst inning of pitching and fielding I've ever seen from an opposing team. I'll detail it here...

Going into the bottom of the 3rd, the Sox were down 6-0. Alex Gonzalez led off the inning with a single. Coco Crisp follows with a single, and Youkilis follows him with another single to score Gonzalez and send Crisp to 3rd. Ortiz walks to load the bases, and then it really gets ugly. Duckworth walks Manny to push across a run, then hits Trot Nixon to force another run across. Mike Lowell is up next and he singles, knocking in the 4th run and advancing the runners one base. With the bases still loaded, Duckworth walks in another one by walking Varitek, and Mark Loretta follows with a single to tie the game and keep the bases loaded.

Duckworth finally gets removed at this point, and the Red Sox have batted around in the inning without a single out. 5 straight batters came up with the bases loaded and knocked in a run, while keeping the bases loaded. 2 runs were walked in while one was plunked in.

The Royals go to Mike Macdougal out of the pen, and he finally gets an out when Gonzalez grounds out, although the lead runner scores. Coco singles to old friend Tony Graffanino at first, and Graffanino commits an error which scores another run. MacDougal then throws a wild pitch which brings in another run, but Youk grounds out for the 2nd out. Papi singles and advances to 2nd on a throwing error by the shortstop, Manny walks, but Trot Nixon pops out to finally end the inning. Final tally: 15 batters, 10 runs (9 of them charged to Duckworth), 5 walks, 1 HBP, and 2 errors.

Remarkably, the Royals would get 3 more in the 5th and actually pull within a run, but the Sox would put 3 more runs up and hold the lead for the eventual 13-9 win. Jon Lester was leading when he left the game but failed to throw 5 complete innings, so the official scorer awards the win to Rudy Seanez who provided an inning and 2/3 of hitless relief.

Alex Gonzalez had 3 base hits and 3 RBI as the Boston Red Sox defeated the
Kansas City Royals 13 to 9 at Fenway Park.

Rudy Seanez(4-2) was solid in relief, and he got credit for the win. He went
1 and 2/3 innings allowing no hits and 1 walk. Boston won despite being
out-hit by Kansas City 14 hits to 10.

Brandon Duckworth(2-3) was the losing pitcher. He struggled with his control
issuing 5 walks in 2 innings. The winning ways continue for Boston. They
now have a record of 8-2 in recent days. Kansas City continued their losing
ways and their record is now 33-60, worst in the division. They are 2-8 in
their last ten games.
