June 18, 2006: Yankees 1 Nationals 0

A disappointing loss for the Nationals, as they get a gem of a start from Mike O'Connor but fail to score any runs off the Yankee tandem of Chien-Meng Wang and Mariano Rivera. O'Connor goes into the 7th without allowing a hit, although the Yankees score a run in the 4th after Derek Jeter walks, advances to 2nd on a passed ball, steals 3rd, and then scores on another passed ball. Unfortunately, the single run would turn out to be the only one scored in the game by either team.

The Nationals next series is in Boston, making it the first time my two teams play each other since 2001 when the Expos took 2 of 3 from the Red Sox.

Chien-Ming Wang pitched 7 strong innings as the New York (AL) Yankees beat the
Washington Nationals by a score of 1 to 0.

Wang(5-4) dominated Washington hitters. He didn't allow much, just 2 hits and
1 walk in 7 innings. Wang mowed down 8 Washington batters improving his ERA
from 3.70 to 3.39. New York (AL) had only 5 hits for the afternoon.

Wang got help from Mariano Rivera who earned his 21st save. The losing
pitcher was Mike O'Connor(4-4). He was the victim of a defensive lapse and
did not allow an earned run in the game.
