September 20, 2006: Nationals 5 Braves 3
Saturday, October 27, 2007
| This was another game where the Nats were down early, came back to tie it, and went ahead in the late innings and held on for the win. However, this one could have gone quite differently...in the top of the 6th, the Braves had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out and the pitcher's spot due up. They pinch hit with Daryle Ward, who is a pretty decent pinch hitter, which I know because he spent most of this season on the Nationals. Since first is open, I intentionally walk him. Now there is the lefty Pete Orr due up and Nats starter Ramon Ortiz has already allowed 9 hits and 2 home runs in the game, so I bring in Billy Traber, the one lefty in my pen. Traber gets Orr to fly out to left and the Braves send the runner from third. Soriano uncorks a throw and gets the runner at the plate! No runs cross the plate, the game remains tied, and the Nats eventually strike with a 7th inning homer from Soriano. The Braves get a runner on in the 8th but he gets erased when caught stealing 2nd, and Chad Cordero shuts them down in the 9th with 2 K's for his 35th save of the season. Also, both Austin Kearns and Ryan Zimmerman got hits, so their hitting streaks extend to 21 and 17 games respectively. In league news, the Rockies are still clinging to playoff hopes and keeping the Mets, Phillies, and Padres from clinching playoff spots. All 3 of those teams sit at 91 wins while the Rockies are at 81 wins with 10 left to play. That means that all 3 teams have magic numbers of 1: for the Mets and Phillies, it's a playoff spot; for the Padres, it's the NL West. The Phillies now sit just a half game back of the Mets for the NL East. |

Alfonso Soriano connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI as the Washington
Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves by a score of 5 to 3.
Washington took the lead for keeps in the bottom of the 7th inning with 2 runs
on 3 hits. Brian Schneider led off and keyed the rally when he doubled.
After an out was recorded, Soriano came to the plate and bombed a two-run
dinger (his 41st of the season). Chad Cordero was perfect in the ninth
giving him his 35th save on the season.
The win went to Billy Traber(5-2) who allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings.
Macay McBride(3-4) was the loser in relief. He allowed 1 run and 1 hit in 1
inning.
