September 15, 2006: Nationals 5 Brewers 3

| It got a little hairy at the end, but the Nationals hold on to win their 6th straight. The offense was a bit quiet at the beginning of this one against old friend Tomo Ohka, but the Nats finally got on the board in the 6th when Nick Johnson hits his 64th double of the season with 2 outs and is followed by a Ryan Zimmerman RBI single. The Nats would score again in the 7th when Francisco Cordero walks the bases loaded and Dennis Safarte relieves him, only to throw a wild pitch to push a runner across. The Nats would round out their scoring in the 8th on a Ryan Church 3 run homer. I figured that Johnson's total of 64 doubles seemed pretty high, so I checked the records. Turns out that 64 doubles would tie the NL record, held by Joe Medwick of the Cardinals who did it in 1936. The major league record is 67, accomplished by Earl Webb of the Red Sox in 1931! Johnson's total would be good for the NL record for most doubles for a left-hander, the old record was 62. Of course, the Nats have 15 games left so Johnson has plenty of time to break the NL record and maybe even go after Webb's record of 67! |

Ramon Ortiz came through with a solid 7 innings at RFK STADIUM where the
Washington Nationals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5 to 3.
Milwaukee was unable to recover after Washington went ahead in the bottom of
the 7th inning scoring one runner. Milwaukee had a chance in the 9th but
they came up short.
The victory went to Ortiz(13-11) who went 7 innings, allowing 1 run. Chad
Cordero gained credit for his 33rd save. Francisco Cordero(7-4) absorbed the
loss in relief.
Washington continued on their recent roll, their winning streak now reaching 6
games and counting. Frank Robinson was clearly happy after the game --
