September 23, 2006: Red Sox 11 Blue Jays 10

An ugly win for the Sox, but a win nonetheless! The Sox score in 5 different innings while the Jays score in 6 different innings, and the Jays outhit the Sox 19-14. This one looked like it was going to be an easy win for the Sox when they staked out to a 7-2 lead in the 4th, but the Blue Jays roared right back with consecutive homers to chase Devern Hansack in the 4th and then Lenny Dinardo did little to stop the bleeding. Dinardo ends up giving up 3 runs and 6 hits in just 2/3 of an inning, and it would be tied at 7 by the end of the 5th.

Neither team would score in the 6th, but the Sox would strike for 4 runs in the top of the 7th. It's interesting to note that they did it on 4 consecutive singles - Trot Nixon singled to lead off the inning, then pinch runner Coco Crisp stole 2nd. Varitek struck out but Wily Mo Pena was intentionally walked. Eric Hinske singles to score Crisp and move Pena to 3rd, pinch hitter Carlos Pena singled to score Wily Mo and move Hinske to 2nd, pinch hitter Gabe Kapler singled to score Hinske and move Carlos to 3rd, and finally Kevin Youkilis would single to score Carlos and send Kapler to 2nd. David Ortiz would walk to load the bases, but both Mike Lowell and Coco Crisp would fail to come through. The Foulke/Timlin/Papelbon combination would work an inning each and give up 3 runs total, but it's enough to put this one in the win column for the Sox.

The Red Sox win over the Blue Jays helped the Yankees, whose magic number now stands at 1. However, the Sox gained a game on both the Twins and Blue Jays in the wild card race and are now 5.5 back with 7 to play.

Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays by a score of 11 to 10.

Boston scored 4 runs in the 7th inning with the help of 5 hits. They would be

Papelbon earned his 38th save. A.J. Burnett(10-3) was the loser. By
