September 30, 2006: Nationals 7 Mets 6

Twos were wild in this game...first for David Wright and the Mets, and ultimately for Jose Vidro and the Nationals.

Wright started off with 2 in the 1st, a 2 run homer to put the Mets up 2-0. In the 2nd, he would commit an error that should have been the 3rd out but ends up leading to a Nats run. Carlos Beltran would get in on the fun with a 2 run shot in the 4th to make it 4-1 Mets, while the Nats would get 2 singles and 2 walks in the bottom of the 5th to score their 2nd run. Wright would commit his 2nd error in the bottom of the 7th, again with 2 outs. The Nats ended up loading the bases and Ryan Zimmerman extended his hitting streak to 26 games with a 2-run single to tie the game. Wright would make up for his 2 errors with another 2-run homer in the top of the 8th to give the Mets a 2 run lead. After a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 8th, Billy Wagner would come in for the 2 inning save. The Nats would end up getting 2 singles off him in the inning, leading to one run to make it 6-5 Mets. In the 9th, Felipe Lopez would lead off with a single, Zimmerman would strike out, but Jose Vidro would add a 2-run homer to make it the 2nd straight Nats walk-off win on a 2 run homer!

Despite the Mets loss, they clinch the division due to the Phillies 9-7 loss to the Marlins. The Phillies can still tie for the division title, but the Mets get the title because of winning the season series between the teams. The Mets will have home field over the Astros, while the Phillies will open their NLDS series in San Diego.

With the hometown crowd on the edge of their seats, Washington Nationals came
from behind to top New York (NL) Mets, 7 to 6.

Washington came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 2
runs using 2 hits. Felipe Lopez started the inning off right when he
delivered a single. Ryan Zimmerman was next to the plate, but was promptly
struck out. Jose Vidro then popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 7th
of the season) making Washington the victor and beginning a joyous home town
celebration. Washington totaled 10 on the night.

The win was credited to Felix Rodriguez(1-1) who went 1 inning allowing no
runs. Billy Wagner(3-6) was the loser in relief. He allowed 4 hits and no
walks in 1 and 1/3 innings.

Frank Robinson was ebullient after the game, 'It's great to win a hard fought
game like that. Our guys just weren't going to be denied. And did you see
the fans - they were going wild! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win tonight!'
