September 29, 2006: Nationals 6 Mets 4

The Nationals continue to be a thorn in the side of the two teams fighting for the NL East title. After taking 2 of 3 from the Phillies, the Nats take the first game of their final weekend series against the Mets. They do it in grand fashion as well, winning the game on a 2-run Felipe Lopez home run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th.

Ryan Zimmerman also homered in this game, which extended his hitting streak to 25 games. That ties Miguel Tejada of the Orioles for the longest streak in MLB this season.

Fortunately for the Mets, the Phillies fell to the Marlins which means that the Mets maintain their 1 game lead. With 2 left to play, the Mets need just one win or a Phillies loss to clinch a tie. Since the Mets won the season series, they would be the division champion and the Phils would be the wild card if a tie occurs. The NL East champion will have home field over the Astros, while the wild card will play the Padres.

The AL playoffs still have one spot left up for grabs, the AL West. The A's lost and the Rangers won, which puts the A's lead at 1 game. A tie in this race would mean a single game to determine who wins the division and gets to travel to Detroit for the ALDS. The Yankees will have home field over the wild card Twins in the other series.
