| Despite outhitting the Phillies, the Nationals lose by a 6-4 score and the Phillies remain deadlocked with the Mets for the NL East lead with 5 games left to play. The Nats got a couple late runs on a George Lombard pinch hit homer, but they couldn't get any more in the 9th as Tom Gordon picks up hi 33rd save. |

In a close game the Philadelphia Phillies got by the Washington Nationals by
the score of 6 to 4.
Philadelphia came up with 2 runs in the 3rd inning. The crucial at-bat was
provided by Jeff Conine who quieted the home crowd when he tripled plating
two runs. Tom Gordon was perfect in relief and got the save, his 33rd.
Brett Myers(17-7) went 8 innings allowing 4 runs for the win. Ramon
Ortiz(13-12) was the loser. He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 6 hits and
3 walks.
