September 25, 2006: Blue Jays 11 Red Sox 4

Let us mourn the loss of the 2006 Red Sox playoff hopes. This loss, combined with the Twins 11-6 win over the Royals, puts the Sox 6.5 back in the wild card race with just 5 games left in the season. The Blue Jays remain 4 games back of the Twins by virtue of the win.

Nothing much impressive in this game, although David Ortiz did hit his 49th home run and Mike Lowell became the 3rd member of the team to reach 100 RBI with his 2 run homer in the 2nd.

Craig Hansen's 8th almost led to more runs for the Blue Jays, as he loaded the bases on 2 walks and a single before getting an out. He then struck out Aaron Hill for the first out, got Jason Phillips to fly to center for the 2nd out, and David Murphy earned him the third out with a throw to the plate to nail the runner trying to score from 3rd.

It's interesting to note that while the Red Sox have 91 wins and are already eliminated from the playoffs, the Angels have 78 wins and are still in the playoff race. That's because the Angels are just 3 back of the division leading A's, who are just a half game ahead of the 2nd place Rangers. That division might come down to the last day or perhaps even a playoff game?
