October 7, 2006: Phillies 9 Padres 7 (Padres lead series, 2-1)
Tuesday, November 13, 2007
| The Phillies stave off elimination behind a couple unlikely heroes in a game that looked like a disappointing loss and turned into a remarkable win. Let's start in the top of the 7th. The Padres had just tied the game at 4 with 2 runs in the top of the 6th. Arthur Rhodes is in the game for the Phils. Brian Giles leads off with a triple and the Phils are already in trouble. Adrian Gonzalez lines out, but then Mike Piazza hits a deep fly ball to score Giles with the go-ahead run. Russell Branyan would hit a ball to Chase Utley that Utley would misplay, but Mike Cameron would line out to end the inning with Branyan stranded at 1st. In the bottom of the 7th, Mike Leiberthal would lead off the inning with a home run to tie the game! It was his 2nd homer of the game, he had a 2-run shot in the 3-run 2nd when Ryan Howard also went deep. The Padres would then get 2 outs before Jimmy Rollins singled, and Rollins get nabbed trying to steal 2nd to end the inning. In the 8th, Geoff Geary would almost blow it up for the Phillies. He enters the game to start the inning and allows 3 straight singles. With the bases loaded and no outs, the Phils bring in Ryan Madson out of the bullpen. Madson gets Dave Roberts to ground to 2nd, and Chase Utley atones for his earlier error by throwing home to nail the lead runner. The throw goes back to first and the Phils complete the double play without any runners crossing the plate. Brian GIles hits an easy ground out to 3B Abraham Nunez, but Nunez muffs it and the runner scores from third! This brings Adrian Gonzalez to the plate and he singles to push across another run and make it 7-5 Padres. Madson gets Mike Piazza to ground out for the third out. The Phils would go down 1-2-3 in the 8th, and Madson would have better luck in the 9th and keep the Padres from scoring. So it all comes down to the Phillies 9th against NL Cy Young award winner Trevor Hoffman. Chris Coste pinch hits for Jeff Conine and starts things off right with a single. Pat Burrell is up next, and he takes Hoffman deep to tie the game! Mike Lieberthal is up next and I thought how great it would be for him to win the game with his 3rd homer of the day, but he grounds out. Abraham Nunez walks which brings up Jose Hernandez, and he follows Burrell's lead and puts one in the seats to win the game and extend the series for at least one more game! It will be Jamie Moyer for the Phils in game 4 against Woody Williams of the Padres. |

WEB GEMS- Bot 6th: Josh Barfield robbed Pat Burrell of a base hit.
Catcher Mike Lieberthal cracked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Citizen's Bank
Park as the Philadelphia Phillies won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat
the San Diego Padres by the count of 9 to 7.
Philadelphia came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 9th
inning scoring 4 runners on 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by
Pat Burrell who made the crowd happy when he cracked a two-run shot (his 1st
of the season). Philadelphia finished with 11 hits in the victory.
The winning pitcher was Ryan Madson(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings.
Trevor Hoffman(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.
'What a win!', Madson said. 'These are the kind of games that stand out in
your mind at the end of a season.'
