October 4, 2006: Padres 2 Phillies 1 (10) (Padres lead series, 1-0)

The Phillies' first foray into the postseason in the history of my SOM replays starts out as a pitchers duel and ends up as a heartbreaking extra inning loss. Both starters (Brett Myers for the Phils, Jake Peavy for the Pads) get pulled in the 6th but they are both followed by a left reliever who goes 2+ no-hit innings (Arthur Rhodes for the Phils, Alan Embree for the Pads). The difference is that Embree pitches into the 9th and allows a leadoff walk to Jimmy Rollins, who steals 2nd before the Padres go to Scott Linebrink from the 'pen. Linebrink allows consecutive singles to Shane Victorino and Chase Utley, with Utley's single scoring Rollins with the game's only run to that point. Utley steals 2nd, but Linebrink then gets 3 outs with the runners stranded on 2nd and 3rd.

Tom Gordon comes in with the 1-0 lead and strikes out the first batter, but then Mike Cameron ties the game with one swing of the bat. Gordon gets the last 2 outs but the game goes to extra innings. The Phils go down 1-2-3 in the 10th. Dave Roberts draws a 1-out walk in the bottom of the 10th and then steals both 2nd and 3rd. After a Brian Giles walk, Adrian Gonzalez grounds out but Roberts is able to score. So that's a walk-off ground out I guess?

42,029 fans were treated to a fine game at Petco Park as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The San Diego Padres won by the
slimmest of margins, 2 to 1.

The score was knotted at 1 after nine innings. San Diego won it in the 10th
inning. After an out was recorded, Dave Roberts drew a walk. Roberts got a
good lead and stole second. San Diego continued their aggressive style with
another stolen base. Brian Giles followed and he drew a walk. Adrian
Gonzalez stepped into the box and would ground out making San Diego the
victors to the delight of the home town faithful. San Diego had only 6 hits
for the game.

Scott Linebrink(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings. Tom
Gordon(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings
giving up 1 hit and 2 walks.
