October 3, 2006: Yankees 10 Twins 7 (Yankees lead series, 1-0)

Johan Santana becomes the 2nd league ERA leader today to get beat up in his first playoff start. Santana had a 2.81 ERA during the regular season, but he has a 67.50 playoff ERA after allowing 2 homers and 5 earned runs in 2/3 of an inning. A-Rod was the big hitter for the Yankees, going 3 for 5 with 4 RBI. Jason Giambi and Hideki Matsui also got in on the fun with 3 run homers.

Even with the offensive firepower, the Yankees needed Mariano Rivera to get the last 2 outs for the save. The Twins got 2 runs in the 9th and had the tying run on deck when Rivera entered the game, but he got batting champion Joe Mauer to ground out and Mike Cuddyer to fly out to end the game.

At Yankee Stadium the New York (AL) Yankees outscored the Minnesota Twins 10
to 7.

Alex Rodriguez helped send the fans home happy. He popped a two-run clout
over the fence (his 1st of the season) in the 1st inning, slapped a base-hit
which was good for two runs in the 2nd inning and slapped a single in the 8th
inning. Minnesota made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push
the needed runs across.

The win went to Chien-Ming Wang(1-0) who allowed 5 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings.
Wang got help from Mariano Rivera who earned his 1st save. Johan
Santana(0-1) was given the loss.

'It was a tough one to lose' said Ron Gardenhire 'We'll get them next time
out.'
