October 3, 2006: Mets 10 Astros 1 (Mets lead series, 1-0)

The Mets kick off the playoffs in grand fashion, dominating the Astros by a 10-1 score. Astros starter Roy Oswalt led the NL during the regular season with a 2.23 ERA, but the Mets prove to be too much as he allows 6 ER in just 4 innings. The Mets big hitters were the 7 and 8 hitters in the lineup - #7 hitter Shawn Green was 3 for 4 with a double and 3 runs scored, while #8 hitter Jose Valentin was 3 for 4 with 3 homers and 7 RBI!

While Valentin was knocking them out of the park, Mets starter John Maine was easily handling the Astros hitters. Maine allowed just one run in 8 IP, a 7th inning Aubrey Huff home run.

The Mets and Astros have an off-day before the game 2 battle between 2 men with over 600 major league wins between them - Tom Glavine for the Mets and Roger Clemens for the Astros.

Jose Valentin smacked 3 homeruns and had 7 RBI as the New York (NL) Mets beat
the Houston Astros by a score of 10 to 1.

Valentin was a one-man wrecking crew. He cracked a two-run shot in the 2nd
inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in the 4th inning
and smacked a three-run homer (his 3rd of the season) in the 5th inning. New
York (NL) out-hit Houston for the game, 12 hits to 4.

John Maine(1-0) was the winner allowing 1 run in 8 innings. Roy Oswalt(0-1)
was hit with the loss. He gave up 6 runs in 4 innings of work.

'It's just about getting in a good hitting position and just going out there
and being prepared,' Valentin said. 'You try to hit in your own capacity and
not do too much. I just try to have a good approach, day after day, game by
game, and pitch by pitch.'
