October 1, 2006: Red Sox 19 Orioles 0
Tuesday, November 06, 2007
| The 2006 Boston Red Sox season comes to an end not with a whimper but with a bang, as they put a 19-0 whipping on the Orioles in the season's final day. This one started out quiet but turned into a laugher pretty quickly when the Sox sent 6 men to the plate and had 5 runs before the O's could record an out in the 3rd. The Sox would end up getting 8 runs in the inning and would add 5 runs in the 5th when they once again batted around. Trot Nixon has another killer day in what will end up being his last game in a Red Sox uniform, going 4 for 5 with 4 runs scored and 6 RBI. He had a single and a 3 RBI double in the 3rd inning alone. Following him in the order was Mark Loretta, who went 5 for 6 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI of his own. Loretta had 3 of those on a 5th inning homer. Devern Hansack pitches a gem of a game for his first major league win, going 7 innings and allowing just 3 hits while walking none and striking out 7. Lenny Dinardo would get the last 6 outs to preserve the shutout. Interestingly enough, Hansack pitched even better in real life on the last day of the season - he pitched a rain-shortened 5 inning no hitter! In league news, the Yankees shut out the Blue Jays to lock up the AL's best record. The Blue Jays and Red Sox end up tied for 2nd in the AL East at 94-98 - an eight game improvement over real life for the Sox, but still not good enough to make the playoffs. The wild card Twins ended up at 101-61. The season also will be extended a day for the A's and Rangers, who ended up tied at 85-77 and will play a one game playoff to determine the AL West champion. While Oakland won rather easily today over the Angels, the Rangers were down 4-3 going into the 9th in Seattle against closer JJ Putz, who had 25 saves during the season. The Rangers would end up hanging 5 runs on him in the 9th and taking the 8-4 win! |
