September 14, 2006: Orioles 9 Red Sox 8 (11)

This one is probably in my top 5 most bizarre games ever. Lenny Dinardo gets torched for 7 runs in 3+ innings, and the Sox are just going through the motions in what would eventually become an 8-0 Oriole drubbing. So going into the bottom of the 8th, I make a bunch of defensive substitutions to give other guys some playing time.

So down by 8 runs, the Sox come up for their last chance in the 9th. Kevin Youkilis leads off with a walk. Next up is Mark Loretta, who came into the game with a 15 game hitting streak but is hitless thus far in the game. He singles, extending his hitting streak and putting a lone bright spot on this day. Ortiz was up next and he strikes out. Wily Mo Pena walks, so now the bases are loaded and maybe the Sox can put a run on the board? The Orioles finally pull starter Adam Loewen and go to Julio Manon out of the bullpen. Manon walks Hinske, so the Sox score and now the bases are loaded for David Murphy. Murphy, who had one home run in the real 2006, plants one in the stands for a grand slam home run! Well wait a minute, now it's 8-5 and there's only one out...Alex Cora walks and the Orioles get serious, they go to closer Chris Ray. Dustin Pedroia greets Ray with a home run and it's a one run game! Ken Huckaby is up next and even he gets in on the action with a single to put the tying run on 1st. I go to Gabe Kapler as a pinch runner. Youks comes back up, the Sox have batted around and still only have one out. Youkilis pops up and now it's up to Loretta. He singles to advance Kapler to 3rd, then Ortiz walks and the bases are loaded once again, this time for Wily Mo Pena. I don't trust Pena's frequent strikeouts so I play the matchups and pinch hit with Carlos Pena. Carlos walks and Kapler crosses the plate with the tying run! The Red Sox, with 3 of their regulars still in the lineup, have scored 8 runs in the 9th inning to tie the game! Unfortunately, Eric Hinske strikes out to end the inning.

So we go to extra innings, where Ray settles down and Keith Foulke comes in to give the Sox 2 shutout innings. Mike Timlin takes over in the 11th and immediately gives up a leadoff single to Melvin Mora. Nick Markakis hits a ball deep to right, but Murphy is there with the catch. Miguel Tejada doubles to left, Mora heads for home, and Youkilis throws the ball away for an error and a heartbreaking loss after a remarkable comeback. It also costs Mike Timlin his first loss of the season against 10 wins. Oddly, the game does not record Youkilis' error even though the play account clearly said "Youkilis throws the ball away for an error". I suppose it's a good thing, because the Sox managed to make 4 other errors over the course of the game, 2 in the O's big 6th run 4th.

Unfortunately for the Sox, the Yankees and Twins both win so the deficits now sit at 9.5 games in the division and 2 games in the wild card. The Yankees completed a 3 game sweep of the Devil Rays to extend their winning streak to an impressive 17 games, and guess who's next on their schedule? The Red Sox, in Yankee Stadium.

Third baseman Melvin Mora had 3 base hits and Adam Loewen mowed down 10 Boston
batters as the Baltimore Orioles outscored the Boston Red Sox in 11 innings 9
to 8.

Both teams were tied at 8 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, Baltimore
pulled the game out in the 11th inning. Mora lined a single. After an out
was recorded, Miguel Tejada stepped up to the plate and he doubled making
Baltimore the winners and sending the 6,904 fans home happy. Baltimore
out-hit Boston for the game, 17 hits to 8.

The victory was credited to Chris Ray(3-5) who went 2 and 2/3 innings,
allowing 2 runs. The losing pitcher was Mike Timlin(10-1) in relief.
