September 10, 2006: Red Sox 9 Royals 8

Up 8 to 5 going into the bottom of the 9th? Those are the games you still find a way to lose when you're in the midst of a 14 game losing streak. and, that is exactly what the Royals do, as the Red Sox come through for 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th and win the game 9-8, sending the Royals to their 15th straight victory. The Royals may be having the worst 30 day span ever - since August 11th, they have won just 3 games and lost 26, a dismal .103 winning percentage.

The Sox were down by as much as 4 runs in this game, but came back to within a run with 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th but then gave the Royals 2 right back in the top of the 8th. That three run lead would stand until the bottom of the 9th, and here's how the Sox staged the comeback:

Mark Loretta is hitting .464 in the month of September and hit .345 in August. He has managed to boost his average from .253 on August 4th up to .285 today.

Also worth noting is Carlos Pena, who made the 2nd out in the 9th. Pena was a September callup in 2006, hitting .273 in 33 AB with one homer. With me, he has 20 plate appearances to date and has yet to get a hit. He has walked once and made an out the other 19 times.

Second baseman Mark Loretta had 3 base hits at Fenway Park as the amazing
Boston Red Sox staged a comeback win over the slumping Kansas City Royals by
the count of 9 to 8.

Boston came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning as they
scored 4 runs on 4 base hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Mike Lowell
who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he lifted one out of the park
for a two run home run (his 17th of the season). Although they lost, Kansas
City did out-hit Boston 14 to 11.

The victory went to Keith Foulke(2-0) who went 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing no
runs. Joe Nelson(3-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. He gave up 4 hits
and 2 walks in 2/3 of an inning.

Terry Francona was all smiles after the ballgame, 'It sure was looking pretty
dim there for a while, but our guys never gave up - and neither did our fans
- they kept cheering us on. What a sweet win!'
