September 10, 2006: Nationals 12 Rockies 10

Just your average pitcher's duel at Coors Field. :) Actually, this one was sort of a duel in the sense that they were dueling to see who sucks more. Nats starter Pedro Astacio allows 6 hits, 6 runs (all earned), and issues 6 walks over his 5 innings. Rockies starter Jeff Francis goes 5 1/3, allowing 11 hits, 9 runs (all earned), and issues 4 walks. Brandon Harper and Bernie Castro both came through for the Nats in a rare start for each - Harper had 4 hits including a solo homer to lead off the Nats 4-run 4th, while Castro went 3 for 6 with 2 triples and 4 RBI. It is the 2nd time this season that Castro has had 2 triples in a game.

The Nats did try to give this one away in the 9th. Saul Rivera had entered to start the 8th and put the Rockies down in order. In the 9th, he walked the leadoff batter and then allowed a single and an RBI double. The Rockies then got another run on a sac fly, making it a 2 run deficit with a runner on 2nd and the tying run at the plate. Rivera walked that batter, and it was time for closer Chad Cordero. The Rockies counter with pinch hitter Vinny Castilla, who flies out for the 2nd out. With runners still on 1st and 2nd, Kaz Mastui flies out as well to end the game.

This is the 3rd win for the Nats in the 4 game series with the Rockies, and also the third time they've scored 10 runs or more in the series. They totalled 44 runs over the 4 games. The Nats also are over the .500 mark for the first time since May 6th, when they were 16-15.

Chad Cordero was great in relief at Coors Field where the Washington Nationals
beat the Colorado Rockies by the score of 12 to 10.

Bernie Castro provided much of the offense. He tripled bringing in two
baserunners in the 2nd inning, tripled resulting in a run in the 5th inning
and lined a one-base hit which plated a run in the 8th inning. Colorado made
it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Pedro Astacio(4-5) went 5 innings allowing 6 runs for the win. Cordero earned
his 32nd save. Jeff Francis(7-11) was the losing pitcher. He got hit hard,
allowing 11 hits and 4 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Astacio, 'I got burned
on a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'
