July 9, 2006: White Sox 10 Red Sox 6

With 2 out in the 9th, this game was a 10-0 blowout in which the White Sox pounded the Red Sox with 5 home runs and Jose Contreras pitched a one-hitter. 8 batters later, there were still 2 out but the Red Sox had scored 6 runs, had runners on 1st and 3rd, and Ortiz and Manny due up. Unfortunately, Davd Ortiz would ground out to end the game.

Contreras allowed a 2nd inning hit to Trot Nixon which would be the only hit the Red Sox would muster until the 9th. With Nixon up as the potential 3rd out, Contreras hit him with a pitch. The next batter, Mike Lowell, hit a single for the 2nd hit of the game. This loaded the bases, since Ortiz had walked between the first 2 outs. Jason Varitek comes up and hits a grand slam home run! This brought out the White Sox closer, Bobby Jenks, who allowed a single to Mark Loretta and then another home run to Alex Gonzalez. Coco Crisp and Kevin Youkilis each singled, which made the White Sox go to lefty Mike Thornton out of the bullpen, who got Papi to ground out and end the mini-rally.

The White Sox break the Red Sox 4 game winning streak and send them to the all-star break in 2nd place, 5 games back of the Yankees.

First baseman Paul Konerko blasted 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Jose Contreras
came through with a solid 8 and two third innings at US Cellular Field where
the Chicago (AL) White Sox beat the Boston Red Sox by the score of 10 to
6.

Konerko helped send the fans home happy. He cleared the fences for a two-run
home run in the 1st inning and smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 27th of
the season) in the 6th inning. Boston threatened in the 9th but Chicago (AL)
was able to put down the rally.

Contreras(4-9) went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 4 runs for the win. Matt
Thornton recorded the save, his 1st. Curt Schilling(7-10) was tagged with
the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 5 innings of work.

'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said Terry Francona after the game.
'We lost this game today because we didn't follow the instructions every
Little Leaguer hears every day.'
