July 7, 2006: Red Sox 5 White Sox 3

Game 1 of the Battle of the Sox goes to the Red variety, with the Red Sox pulling out a 5-3 win with 2 runs in the 9th. The Sox were up 3-1 in the 8th when Rudy Seanez allowed a 2-run homer to Juan Uribe, ruining what would have been a win in a well-pitched game for starter Jon Lester. Fortunately, Mike Lowell led off the 9th with a walk and was followed by timely hits from Mark Loretta, Gabe Kapler, and Alex Gonzalez to push 2 runs across the plate.

In a good matchup it was the Boston Red Sox 5, the Chicago (AL) White Sox 3 at
US Cellular Field.

Boston erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 9th inning with 2
runs using 3 hits. Mike Lowell opened up the inning nicely when he drew a
walk. Mark Loretta stepped into the batter's box and he lined a one-base
hit. Gabe Kapler then delivered a base-hit scoring a run. Alex Gonzalez
followed and he doubled scoring the final run of the inning. Boston had 11
hits for the game and Chicago (AL) had 8.

The victory was credited to Mike Timlin(6-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no
runs. Timlin got help from Jonathan Papelbon who was credited with his 17th
save. The losing pitcher was Brandon McCarthy(2-2) in relief. Despite
losing, he struckout 5 Boston batters in 2 and 1/3 innings.

This win by Boston continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten
games, they have a record of 8-2. For the season, they are 48-36. Chicago
(AL) will hope that this loss is only a 'blip' on their recent 8-2 run - and
not a start of a new trend.
