July 5, 2006: Red Sox 7 Devil Rays 5
Wednesday, July 04, 2007
| The Sox were down a run and down to their last batter in the 9th when Coco Crisp singled, which brought up Kevin Youkilis who hit a 2-run home run to take the lead. A single, walk, and single followed to add another run, and the Sox had a 7-5 lead which closer Jonathan Papelbon easily protected to earn his 16th save. Jason Johnson had an interesting go of it in his 2nd start for the Sox. He started the game by allowing single, single, triple, single to the Devil Rays which gave them 3 quick runs. He then settled down and allowed only 2 singles over the next 5 innings, one of which was quickly erased on a double play. Then in the 7th the leadoff hitter got on with a single, which Russell Branyan followed up with a home run. I wisely gave Johnson the hook at that point, but his 6 IP/8H/5 ER doesn't tell the story of how well he pitched in the 2nd through 6th innings. Of course if you look at the web gems, you can see that Johnson almost allowed 2 additional home runs. Poor Ty Wigginton went 0 for 3 on the day and was robbed twice of a home run, once in the 2nd by Coco Crisp and once in the 4th by Manny! |

WEB GEMS- Bot 2nd: Coco Crisp robbed Ty Wigginton of a Homerun!
Bot 4th: Manny Ramirez robbed Ty Wigginton of a Homerun!
Mark Loretta hit one over the fence at Tropicana Field as the Boston Red Sox
won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays by the
count of 7 to 5.
Boston came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs
on 4 hits. After two outs Coco Crisp initiated the scoring spurt when he
stroked a single. Kevin Youkilis came next and he lifted one out of the park
for a two run home run (his 5th of the season). David Ortiz then delivered a
base-hit. Manny Ramirez stepped in and he drew a walk. Trot Nixon stepped
into the box and lashed a single scoring the final run of the inning. Boston
banged out 10 on the night.
Rudy Seanez(3-1) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Jonathan
Papelbon earned the save, his 16th. Shawn Camp(3-4) was given the loss in
relief. He pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing 3 hits and 1 walk.
'I pin this one on my own shoulders,' Camp said. 'The bottom line is I didn't
get the job done. Our fans deserve better than this.'
