July 5, 2006: Nationals 10 Marlins 9

| Not exactly a pitchers duel in this one! The Marlins come out swinging in the first, scoring 3 runs off Nationals starter Mike O'Connor on the strength of back to back home runs. They would add another run in the 2nd (off another homer) and 2 more in the 3rd before I pulled O'Connor, while the Nats only managed one run in the first 3 innings off Marlins starter Yusmeiro Petit. The Nationals would finally get to Petit in the 4th, scoring 4 runs thanks to a leadoff homer from Nick Johnson, a key double by Brian Schneider, and a 2-run shot from Marlon Byrd. Johnson had his chance to bust it open when the Nats batted around in the inning, but he lined out with the bases loaded. Meanwhile, reliever Bill Bray was pitching well by finishing out the 3rd and pitching a scoreless 4th. Bray would start to show signs of fatigue in the 5th when the Marlins got to him for 2 more runs, and they would add another off Gary Majewski in the 6th to make it 9-5. It looked like the Nats weren't going to have enough in this one. The Marlins went with reliever Randy Messenger for the 8th, and Royce Clayton starts off the inning by grounding out. Brian Schneider singles for his 3rd hit of the game, and Marlon Byrd walks which brings up the pitcher's spot. I go with the only lefty on my bench to face the righty, and Robert Fick responds with a 3 run home run! The Nats are now down by just one run so the Marlins go to their closer, Joe Borowski. Now I had an experience with Borowski just 3 days earlier in interleague play in which he was the timber box to spark the Red Sox 5 run 9th inning rally to beat the Marlins. This time, he starts out by striking out Alfonso Soriano but then walks Jose Vidro. The next batter is Ryan Zimmerman and he hits a ball that falls between two outfielders, and he turns it into an inside the park home run to take a one run lead! Nick Johnson then grounds out to end the inning. Chad Cordero gets called into duty for the 9th, and he gets a pop out to start the inning but then allows a triple. A sac fly or ground ball to the right side could score the tying run, but Cordero strikes out Wes Helms and Jason Hermedia to end the game and earn his 19th save. |

Brian Schneider had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Washington Nationals
outscored the Florida Marlins 10 to 9.
Washington erupted with the game winning runs in the 8th inning when they
scored 5 runs on 4 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Robert
Fick who thrilled the crowd when he smacked a three-run homer (his 1st of the
season). Florida threatened in the 9th but Washington was able to put down
the rally.
The winning pitcher was Saul Rivera(1-4) who allowed no runs in 2 innings.
Chad Cordero recorded his 19th save. Joe Borowski(0-7) was charged with the
loss in relief.
