July 17, 2006: Marlins 5 Nationals 4

| Poor fielding and a shaky bullpen turn a win into a loss for the Nationals in this one. Tony Armas Jr. was pitching well in his first start off the DL and hadn't allowed a run through the first 5 innings while the Nats got 1 in the 3rd and broke through for 3 in the top of the 6th. In the bottom of the 6th, Armas started to tire and allowed a 2 run home run to Dan Uggla, but managed to get through the inning otherwise unscathed. In the bottom of the 7th, reliever Micah Bowie was able to strike out the first 2 batters before allowing a single, but a ball hit to left fielder Alfonso Soriano ended up being a 2 base error instead of the 3rd out. The Marlins would score in the inning to make it a one run game. In the 9th, I go to Cordero out of the Nats bullpen to hopefully preserve the win and get the save. Cordero gets a ground out from Miguel Olivo, which brings up the pitcher's spot. The Marlins have used up their entire bench so they use pitcher Scott Olsen to pinch hit...and he hits a double! Cody Ross grounds out for the 2nd out of the inning, but then Hanley Ramirez hits one deep and over the fence in left for the walk off home run. |

WEB GEMS- Bot 9th: Jose Vidro robbed Miguel Olivo of a base hit.
Shortstop Hanley Ramirez cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the Florida Marlins
rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Washington Nationals, 5 to
4.
Florida erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs
utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Scott Olsen keyed the
rally when he doubled. One out later, Ramirez came to the plate and popped a
two-run clout over the fence (his 10th of the season) making Florida the
victors to the delight of the home town faithful. Florida managed 9 in their
victory.
Logan Kensing(3-2) went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the victory.
Chad Cordero(3-4) absorbed the loss in relief. 'We just wouldn't give up,'
Ramirez said. 'Much of the credit goes to our fans - they were with us the
whole way.'
