July 14, 2006: Pirates 8 Nationals 5

The Nationals' first game back from the all-star break was going well until the 7th inning, when it all fell apart. Starter Ramon Ortiz had pitched 6 shutout innings but tired in the 7th, allowing a home run and 2 singles before I pulled him in favor of Jon Rauch. The normally reliable Rauch allowed a double to Freddy Sanchez, which scored 2 runs and tied the game, and then allowed a single that knocked in Sanchez with the go-ahead run. Finally, he allowed a 2-run home run to pich hitter Jeromy Burnitz to make it 7-4 Pirates. The Pirates would add one more in the 8th, and the Nats could only muster one in the 9th for the 8-5 final.

Felipe Lopez and Austin Kearns both contributed in their Nationals debut. Lopez went 2 for 5 and would have contributed to an 8th inning rally if Alfonso Soriano hadn't been thrown out at home on the play. Kearns went 0 for 2, but walked 3 times and scored 2 runs. Unfortunately, both men also grounded into a double play during the game.

At PNC Park the Pittsburgh Pirates put a halt to their 5 game losing streak
and outscored the Washington Nationals 8 to 5.

Pittsburgh had 7 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 7th inning with the
help of 6 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Craig Wilson who brought
the crowd to their feet when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run
(his 10th of the season). Pittsburgh finished with 14 hits in the victory.

Matt Capps(4-2) went 2/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the win. Capps got
help from Mike Gonzalez who earned his 7th save. Jon Rauch(1-1) suffered the
loss in relief. He allowed 3 hits and no walks without retiring a batter.

'Ahhh, that victory was surely needed. Man alive, things were getting awfully
grim,' noted Jim Tracy. 'Now, we need to string a bunch of wins together and
turn things around!'
