July 13, 2006: Red Sox 1 A's 0

The Red Sox start out the 2nd half with a remarkable 1-0 victory in which 4 pitchers combined on the shutout. Lester in this game reminded me of watching Lester in the actual 2006 season, he would pitch well but only last 5 or 6 innings because he walked a lot and would end up with high pitch counts early. He goes into the 6th in this one, but walks the first batter in the 6th and was over 100 pitches with a couple right handed hitters coming up. Manny Delcarmen comes in and ends up going 2 innings without allowing a hit, and Mike Timlin and Jonathan Papelbon each add a scoreless inning to complete the shutout. Papelbon shows no ill effects of getting lit up in the all-star game 2 days earlier.

The lone Red Sox run in the 3rd came when Alex Gonzalez scored on a Kevin Youkilis ground out. Gonzalez had singled and been moved to 3rd on a Coco Crisp double.

Jon Lester(3-2) and Esteban Loaiza(2-6) treated the Boston fans to a fine
pitching duel at Fenway Park. The Boston Red Sox eventually emerged as
victors over the Oakland Athletics by the score of 1 to 0.

Boston scored what proved to be the only run of the contest in the bottom of
the 3rd inning. That early run support was enough for Lester and Boston.
Boston had just 4 hits for the night.

Jonathan Papelbon earned his 18th save. 'I just wanted to give my team a
chance to win.' said Lester, 'I got burned on a couple of pitches. But we won
the game, and that's all that matters.'
