2006 All-Star Game: AL 17-10

This year's All-Star Game was all about the hitting. The AL put up 3 runs in the 2nd, 4 in the 3rd, and 2 in the 4th to take a commanding 9-0 lead early. Typically I try to get 2 innings out of my all-star starters, but Liriano came up to bat in the 2nd so I had to pinch hit for him. No problem, pinch hitter Jason Giambi hit a 3-run homer to start off the scoring brigade.

The Red Sox had 3 representatives in this game. Manny Ramirez started in LF and went 1 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI. Mike Lowell entered the game in the 3rd to play 3B and knocked in a run on a groundout in his only AB. Jonathan Papelbon would probably rather forget this All-Star game, as he allowed a single, a double, and 2 walks before being pulled without retiring a batter in the 7th. All 4 runners would eventually score.

The lone Nationals representative was Chad Cordero, who also had a less then stellar relief appearance in the 7th. He struck out Vlad Guerrero and got Jermaine Dye to fly out, but then allowed a double to Lyle Overbay and successive singles to Gary Matthews Jr and Derek Jeter. He was pulled for Brian Fuentes but pinch hitter Grady Sizemore hit a 3 run home run off Fuentes, with 2 of the runs (and 3 total) being charged to Cordero.

Austin Kearns is sort of a Nationals representative in this game - the game is played on the 11th, and he will be traded to the Nationals on the 13th.

I managed to get every position player in the game, and only one pitcher on each side failed to play - Mike Mussina for the AL and Tim Hudson for the NL. There would have been more pitchers to not play, but the relievers on both sides had trouble getting outs.

This is the fifth All-Star game I have played, and the 3rd win for the American League. Previously the NL and AL alternated wins (NL in 2002 and 2004, AL in 2003 and 2005) so this is the first time one league has won 2 in a row.

I've included the play account so you can follow along in the action. The box score is hard to follow with 31 players for each team.

Gary Matthews Jr went deep and had 3 RBI at PNC Park as the American League
club beat the National League ballclub by the count of 17 to 10.

Randy Johnson(1-0) looked good in relief and was the winning pitcher. He gave
up just 1 hit and no walks in 1 inning. American League lit up the
scoreboard in the 3rd inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 4 hits, the 7th
inning when they had 4 runs on 5 hits and the 8th inning with 4 runs on 5
hits. American League finished with 19 hits while National League ended up
with 16.

Chris Young(0-1) took the loss. He gave up 3 runs in 2 innings of work.
