June 24, 2006: Nationals 5 Orioles 3
Sunday, June 03, 2007
| This one looked like it was going to be another hard luck loss for Mike O'Connor, as he pitched well enough to win but the Nationals bats were stymied by O's starter Adam Loewen. With a 3-0 lead going into the 9th, the Orioles went with closer Chris Ray. The Nationals were apparently awoken by the change in pitchers. Alfsonso Soriano led off with a double, followed by a Royce Clayton line out. Jose Vidro singled to score Soriano and then Nick Johnson and Ryan Zimmerman walked to load the bases. Next up was Jose Guillen, who sucks, so I pinch hit with Daryle Ward who sucks against lefties but hits righties well. He hits a grand slam to give the Nats a 5-3 lead! This is the 2nd straight day with a 9th inning grand slam, as Jeff Conine of the Orioles had one a day earlier. Ray gets the next 2 batters to end the inning. Despite his problems a day earlier, I go with Chad Cordero and he gets the O's 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 9th for his 17th save. |

In a dramatic ending the Washington Nationals staged a comeback and held on to
win over the struggling Baltimore Orioles by the count of 5 to 3.
Washington won the game with a rally in the 9th inning when they tallied 5
runs on 3 hits. The big moment was provided by Daryle Ward who silenced the
crowd when he launched a Grand Slam homerun (his 1st of the season). Jon
Rauch(1-0) was helped out by Chad Cordero who pitched a perfect ninth and
recorded his 17th save.
Chris Ray(0-2) absorbed the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning giving up 3
hits and 2 walks. Sam Perlozzo was understandably not very talkative after
his team's tough loss. He quickly showered and changed and when asked about
the game had a terse, yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a
heart-breaker to lose. Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate
just wasn't smilin' on us this afternoon'
